firearms instructor at the range

Dad and I went to shoot this weekend at the club he belongs to. Well, this guy was trying to teach (?) this woman how to shoot. Dad set up his 7 STW at the bench nearby, the guy got uncomfortable and asked if he could shoot at another bench (too noisy). Well, the target this guy had up was about 10 yards away. He gave the lady a 9mm Govt. Model and let her shoot, more berating than helping. She had about a half inch from the top of her hand to the bottom of the backstrap, gun flipping wildly in her hand, which was almost a cup and saucer grip. Hits were going all over the target, settling down into the eight ring, seven ring, etc. He is telling her that she is doing great, no one in her academy could do this well. Several other quotes from our hero, "Take my word, I am a professional," "I am not trying to blow smoke up your a@@" He did not offer her the help on grip or sights or anything that a new person needs to learn. He told her that her elevation was great and just generally did a good job on his ego. Then he broke out the Kowa spotting scope, probably 20x or so (target ten yards away), one for high power rifle shooting, and spotted her through that, making comments about how good she was doing and so on. She said that the guy told her he was a Secret Service firearms instructor. They were shooting old ammo, which were 9mm 115 gr. Silvertips. I did not think the Secret Service used that load, I thought they used 9mm +P+, now they use .357 Sig. Me thinks his motives were for after range activities more than helping the poor woman shoot properly, it takes all types.

Didn’t get half way through your post when I got the same idea.

Kinda reminds me of the old joke about the piccolo player.

It doesn't matter so much who called the instructor an SOB, find out who called the SOB an instructor!

Just because he says he is one don't make it so.

Perhaps he was trying to do some planting.

In his defense, and a weak one here. He was introducing another to the sport, if you will. I wasn' there, but I'll take your word in earnest. We have to believe each other to be a family.

On the downside, if this was his real motives, then potentially he has taken advantage of a grander opportunity than seeding, and potentially alienated another from our ranks.

I think he deserves 10 lashes.
Opinion only.

I won't hand a loaded gun to an uninitiated soul. Even a .22! A decent BB, or pellet gun works wonders for the fearful, simply because it doesn't have the noise associated with it. Then, when they're confident with the procedures of safety, and targeting, I move on to other classes of firearms, specifically .22's. We move on slowly from there.

Best Regards,
Don

Not having been there, others (including me) can't really comment but in his defense, here are one thing to think about ... a first time shooter getting shots in the 7-ring isn't that bad and telling them that they're doing well is a confidence builder (I once had a partner who couldn't hit the target at 7 yards -- it really made me nervous whenever he drew his gun).
