firearms carry abroad

I am considering a trip outside the U.S., probably to South America, Central America or Mexico.

I'd feel more comfortable carrying, as I do while travelling in the U.S., but who do I contact in these other countries to find out what is allowed? Or is there a website like packing.org with a broad view of that info?

Forget about it.It would be cheaper to hire bodyguards. If you run into trouble with the law, bribe them immediately and leave.

I would recommend calling the US embassies in each nation you plan to visit. If anything they'd be the ones helping you out in case you got in legal trouble for carrying.

embassies can give you some information but with the actual legal problems you get into the embassy can't help you. I don't think jails and prisons in this country would be much fun. jails and prisons in other countries can be really nasty. if you would feel safer in a country because you are carrying a gun I would skip that country all together

There was an FFL holder that was at a Gun Show along the border in TX( Laredo IIRC). After the show a group decided to go across the border to eat. They cleaned out his car before going but missed one .22LR round. The FFL holder spent 6 months in a Mexican jail before getting things worked out and back to the States. That's for ONE and only one 22 LR round. Don't even think about taking a gun across the border.

I think I've heard that in Mexico you can get carry permits, but they are may issue, only good for the state that you are in, and you would have to buy the gun there and it cannot be a "military" caliber weapon.

Obviously finding out who you have to go to to get said permit and giving them a large cash donation would probably help you out alot.

You buy the few guns that you can buy legally in Mexico but it all goes through the Army. You apply to them for the permit to buy and they handle it all. Whether you get it and how fast you get it is directly proportional to the generosity of your "mordida". You can forget about a handgun unless you are very well connected politically and financially able to please several key people.

If you intend to carry a gun in Mexico, Central or South America; you should register with Amnesty International. They may look for you when you disappear.
