Tatters, and for that matter USP45usp,
Cheap peace of mind come from having everything locked up.
Even my bedside guns are in a quick-access lockbox (GunVault) bolted to the side of the bed. A feature I like about the GunVault is that the electronic touchpad feature 'goes to sleep' for 30 minutes if five wrong entry code attempts are made. It also has a keylock if the batteries should go dead.
The rest of the guns are in a safe in the guest bedroom, out of sight from a casual viewer. NO ONE has access to the bedroom areas of our house when they visit. I like the idea of a motion detector anyway--thanks for the tip USP! I may just put a door-ajar sensor on that room for good measure.
My 'problem' is that my collection of guns seems to be growing.
I don't know what those evil things are doing in the confines of the dark secluded safe, but I ran out of room for both the guns and the ammo in the same safe. I need a bigger safe! The next house will have a walk-in safe-room!
Filled concrete block walls and a safe-style entry door and a 10x10 room ought to do the job!
For now, I have dealt with the problem in another manner. I bought a couple of the cheaper metal gun cabinets from Wal-Mart (8 gun cabinet for $89) just to store the ammo in. My wife was getting a little freaked out when she would open the guest room closet and see a couple cases worth of various ammo stacked on the shelf and in ammo cans on the floor. The metal gun cabinets are tucked away in the closet--out of sight, out of mind! I did have to make some shelves for the cabinet to stack the ammo a little neater, but that was no problem.
Good Luck!
