hey i was wondering how long it takes to get a response and recieve a fire arm id card after you filled out and turned in all the paperwork??

Ohh, ugly. He's in New Jersey, a state that doesn't even have an RKBA clause in its Constitution!

In answer to the question, a friend of mine recently went into a gun shop there to look at a hunting rifle. When the dealer found out he had no FID, he took the rifle away from my buddy:
"Without a card, I'm not even allowed to let you hold that."!

I don't know if the info is correct; dealers are notoriously bad lawyers. But he claimed the process takes up to 6 months. Good luck.

Rich: same deal in Illinois. without a FOID card no gun shop will even pull a firearm out from under the counter :(

Here it's supposed to take around 30 days but from the day I sent in my application and five bucks to the day I recieved my card in the mail was at least five months. This includes about three months of calling every two weeks to find out where it was and being told numerous stories.

"It's being processed, call back in two weeks..."

"It's being processed, call back in two weeks..."

"We're having computer problems, call back in two weeks..."

"We just upgraded our computer system and there are some glitches, call back in two weeks..."

"It's been processed and the card is being made, call back in two weeks..."

"It's been sent to the Chicago office for the card to be made, call back in two weeks..."

Sounds like a lot of nightmares.

In FL I think your CCWL is supposed to take up to 90 days (or was it 60?) One or the other, Mine took 51. Renewal is supposed to take 2 weeks. Mine came in well under that.

I mention this because I see, from time to time, stories like I see here full of snafus and delays in other states. It's good to be lucky in at least ONE aspect of life !

As an Illinois resident I must show my FOID card to even handle a firearm at a store. My son who lives in AZ., who by Federal law cannot buy a firearm here, can handle them all day long. We also have to show the FOID to buy ammo, my son does not. The non-residents get treated better than the residents.

Mr. Lucibella,
Just curious, did you obtain the permission of ehood87 prior to revealing he was located in New Jersey?
I didn't find that listed in his public profile.
I understand that as the owner/administrator/chief/boss etc. you have access to everyones account information.

The determination of error exists between you and he.
I simply saw New Jersey revealed only by you in response to his general public question.
I glanced at his public profile and I did not see a location displayed by him.
Of course you have access to that information as administrator of the forum.
Did he wish to have that displayed? I don't know. I made the inquiry.

Trainman, It's not like Rich gave out his address, name, and telephone number. He asked a question that would have required him to eventually reveal what state he was in to clarify what a firearm id card is. In legalese that boils down to Inevitable discovery.

I find Rich not guilty by reason of inevitable discovery! I'll allow it. :D

Invention45, I had about the same luck with my CC permit. Supposed to take 90 days and I had mine in under 60 days.

I wasn't aware that this was a question involving jurisprudence, guilt or innocence.
In my opinion, your definition is that if I ask a qustion or make a comment, then it is okay for information that I possibly may not have wanted to be public, be revealed because the administrators deemed that it was germane to the topic that I raised?

I hate to interject into such an academic discourse, but that should be, "between you and him."
You are absolutley right. I stand corrected. My GF just whacked me on the head with her style book.:p

Trainman-
Lessee, you send a letter, asking a group of us to answer how long it'll take to get an FOID, but forget to tell us the state. I note that the letter is postmarked in New Jersey and respond, in good faith, as best I can. I don't reveal the return address or any other markers of identity.

Now, you want to question whether I revealed "personal info"? OK, you've questioned it. Now try a Google search. You'll be amazed what you can find with the information in someone's public profile: pics and everything.

Time to get back on topic now, or did you wish to pursue the sidetrack?

Rich

A coworker recently moved here (North Carolina) from Illinois. When he discovered that I was a gun owner, he asked what he needed to do to get a FOID in North Carolina. When I told him that we had no such requirement, he immediately took his Illinois FOID out of his wallet and cut it up. The smile on his face was priceless. :)
