Firearm CheckList Before Purchase

Hello Ladies and gentlemen some have adhered to the below firearm checklist as a guide before making a purchase of a firearm. Out of the checklist which once are a must and which ones can be compromised and why? Ideally one will want to buy a firearm which meets all these criteria but there are times when it is not possible. Happy New Year everybody and be safe.

Firearm check list.

• Legality
• Affordability
• Reliability
• Accuracy
• Size and weight
• Use i.e. Self-defense, concealment etc
• Firepower i.e. caliber & # of rounds
• Ergonomics
• Simplicity i.e. take down, maintenance etc
• Durability
• Track Record

before this post I have never thought about any of these things and how they stack up in making a decission to purchase a gun. here is my list and reasonings

1 Legality: no point if it isnt legal
2 Firepower i.e. caliber & # of rounds: this is of course the reason I am buying the gun in the first place.
3 Reliability: why have a gun that jams alot
4 Durability: dont wanna be sending it to the shop all the time
5 Track Record: knowing they are a good gun from years of proven experience is a good thing.
6 Affordability: somtimes its nessary to buy the super expensive gun but an affordable one is always better.
7 Ergonomics: fitting my hand well is a plus although if the gun is fun enough, that may outway how comfortable it feels.
8 Accuracy: for what I use them for most all guns are accurate enough
9 Simplicity i.e. take down, maintenance etc: with enough practice and a good manual, any gun can be taken apart and put back togeather.
10 Size and weight: this is never really an issue for me
11 Use i.e. Self-defense, concealment etc: all of my guns are ment for one purpose, making me happy which never seems to be a problem.

As a kid all that I had was a Winchester bolt action .22 LR that was a Christmas present and an old Stevens 12ga. SxS that I bought at a drive-in swap meet. They killed everything that I needed them to until I started hanging out with 'specialist' hunters.

Now I have become one of 'them'.

My first criteria is use followed by research and ultimately, purchase.

You can mix and match many of your topics. For home/personal defense I have .380 pocket pistols, 9mm's, 1911's and 12ga's.

Hunting I can go from .22LR to 45/70 or 12 ga. but most of the time I carry an 1894 Marlin when not hunting birds, I've found that it's the best for my area.

I love the weight issue. IMO if a pound or two is going to limit your hunt maybe you need a trip to the gym. Worse is if you dread to pull the trigger on your ultra weight big bore. An accurate smallbore hit will outweigh a poor bigbore hit every time.

Accuracy, affordability, reliability are pretty much moot subjects today.
Affordability: I rarely buy new, I haunt pawnshops, gunshops, gunshows, classifieds and the i-net once that I know what I want.
Most modern firearms are accurate and reliable.

None of this applies to 'black' firearms about which I know very little.

Nope, never really considered any sort of checklist before. Now that you mention it though, I may as well try and figure one.

- Purpose. No sense in buying a gun that don't serve a purpose.
- Price. Can't buy it if I don't have the money for it.

I reckon that just about sums up my checklist...

The parts that aren't negotiable to me are...

- Reliability: #1 on the list. It must go boom every time I want it to.
- Accuracy: #2 on the list. You can't miss fast enough to win a gunfight.
- Cartridge: #3 means the power of the cartridge must be sufficient
- Ergonomics: #4: If I can't grip it right accuracy suffers. If it's too heavy I suffer. It has to fit my hand reasonably well.

Price - I can negotiate or save up the funds.
