firarms transfer question

I am thinking about selling off a couple of pieces through Auction Arms. I know that I must ship to a FFL, but do I have to ship from a FFL?

Or in other words, if a person in another state buys one of my guns, do I have to send it from my local gunshop or can I ship it myself to a receiving gunshop?

Thanks.

My understanding is that you can ship your own longguns to a FFl but a handgun has to go from a FFL to a FFL.I allso have found that priority mail is the cheapest way to ship.I shipped a carbine to a gunsmith and with ins cost about 10.00.

I'm old and deceitful.

John,,,may not be 100% but when I bought my Makarov it was shipped from the seller to my FFL in AZ. Now-what ya selling?

You only need an FFL at the transferee's (receiving) end be it rifle or long gun. Some FFL's are not aware of that and a call to their local ATF office for a request that the rules be explained to that FFL holder will usually do the trick.

Just to throw a kink in the works. If you sell to another citizen of your home state, you may be able to ship to them directly without using an FFL at all. This is legal under federal law (just don't put a handgun in the postal system). It is also legal under Florida law. YMMV

I've dealt with this exact question and have multiple calls to the ATF and the CA state's Department of Justics firearms division.

It is 100% absolutlely legal to ship via carrier (UPS, Fed Ex) to ship a gun, private person to an FFL. No matter what anyone tells you, especially UPS or even an FFL. Go to http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/index.htm and view the pdf file and go to B9.

It's bad enough to deal with all the federal and state laws...we should NOT have to deal with made-up laws.
