Finnish M39 or Russian M44

I would like to get another rifle and I think it may be one of these. http://www.burnsbro.com has the M39 from many manufacturers and http://www.Cole-distributing.com has the M44. Is there a quality difference among the manufacturers of the M39? I notice there is a price difference with the VKT being least expensive with "B", SNEAK, SAKO, and SK.Y being most expensive. I am not concerned with "collector's" value, I just want a like new condition piece of history that is fun at the range.
How long is the M39 barrel?
thanks.

No4Mk1,

For the best answer to your post I would ask the same thing at this site:

Having said that here is my 2 cents. I have several Mosins and the most accurate of the bunch is the M39. It is considered one of the finest bolt action military rifles ever made. The M44 is also a nice weapon, although, the fit and finish is often not as nice as the M39. The M44 is also less pleseant to shoot due to the recoil it produces. As far a finding "like new" pieces of history, you may or may not. You must remember that these are surplus weapons, and often look it. They usually look better than your average enfield though. If you want to get a good shape one you need to try one of the many dealers that specialize in handpicking MilSurps. Some of these are Ellisons, Allens Armory, Mark Kubes in Fla, Doug Bowser, Empire Arms. Ask about them at the above link and you will get more answers than you ever wanted. For a shooter, I would suggest a Sako M39. Well put together, accurate and affordable. I have not measured the barrel of the two so I am not sure how they compare, I would hazard a guess the M39 has the longer barrel. My advice is to go to Tuco's, hang out reading the posts, ask any questions, look on his trader board and check the links to the dealers he has. The 7.62x54 is a great cartridge and at the present time is very affordable, and I believe winchester is going to start making a non corrosive hunting round soon.

I have 2 Finn M39's and a USSR M44. I think the M39 is one of the better Mill Surp rifles. I would pick that one if it was me. BobR fine post on this subject was right on target.

If you are getting this as a shooter, then DEFINITELY get the M39. Much more pleasant to shoot. The M44 is like a little fire breathing dragon!

Your choice but I have both :)

my reccomendation

M-1939 all the way.

for collecting value get a SK.Y (if you can find one)
for shooting the are all about the same (VKT/SAKO)
