finishes, need a quick reply

I'll be heading out the door soon to check out some small handguns. Is SS mostly for looks, or does it offer significant improvement over blued or parkerized? And what is parkerized? Hey you! Stop rolling your eyes! I'm new!
Thanks,
Jim

Parkerized is a black phosphate finish, the most notable parkerized handgun would be glock slides.

Stainless Steel has better rust protection in my estimation than carbon steel. Usually SS slides have finishes like nickel, blued or even parkerized. Finishes tend to vary from companies in terms of quality and durability.

Actually the finish on a Glock slide is called a "Tennifer" finish.

FYI. ;)

Actually, tennifer is a heat treating process performed on the Glock slide before it is finished in manganese phosphate, or "parkeried". bamf is correct.

Parkerizing does provide a more corrsion-resistent finish than bluing, but the modern phenolic resin finishes are superior to both. Stainless is an excellent "finish", but it's not really a finish, you know.

I have had a Glock for daily carry for awhile now and in some bad conditions. What is rust?

If you want the SS look, why don't you get brushed hard chrome? If you want corrosion resistance, throw in an electroless nickel finish underneath the chrome.

I do believe that a baked enamel or phenolic finish can be applied over manganese phosphate parkerizing for a superior finish in all aspects. The Russians, to my knowledge, epoxy coat their parkerizing for ease of maintenance.

Stainless is a wonderful choice for rust resistance but falls short in overall performance. It's a marginal metal for many applications. You'll note that on many 'stainless' guns there are many carbon steel parts that have been nickel plated, chrome plated, or just blued. One advantage of most finishes is that they can be applied to a variety of metals more appropriate to many applications.

Me? I prefer Titanium Nitride.

Ruger has a really cool finish for Aluminum parts. Ever seen their P Series pistols. Their finish is quite strong and appeals to my tastes. Give me a TiN slide and I'd really like it.
