Can anyone please point me in the direction of some information that explains what type of finish applied to an M-16/M-4 rifle receiver. Is it powder coat? Does it require a primer, is it parkerized? I have noe idea and I would really like to know.
Thanks

Paint

I was watching Sons of Guns tonight and it showed them painting the receiver and carbon fiber for-end tube. Are some receivers powder coated or painted? I have seen a ceramic based paint for sale that is used on guns. The reason I ask is I found an sks in the father in laws basement. His damp basement. The weapon still had alot of cosmoline on it but someone cleaned the rear bolt cover and then left it in the damp and it rusted. It was a flat black color. I had to bead blast it to get all of the rust off and now it is silver. I need to cover it with some form of finish.

milspec M16A1/A2s, M4s...

To my limited knowledge as a US Army veteran(04 years active duty); the M-16s and early CAR-15s aka; M4s had parkerized or andonized(check the correct spelling) coatings and chrome lined barrels.

The early milspec M16s based on the AR-15 had some minor upgrades based on the "black rifle's" use in combat(Southeast Asia).

The later(post 1991 era) M16a2s may have used a different plate or coating.

ps: I have not watched the new Sons of Guns series but I'm not very impressed with the network ads. They come off like a bunch of Cajun goofballs. :(

Military AR rifles have a formal specification for the finish, which is an anodized finish over the aluminum, and with a mil-spec dry lubricant coating added.

Commercial rifles can have anything or nothing.
Most are anodized, but some are coated with various coatings from the paint type to the polymer coatings, all depending on what the manufacturer wants to use.
Some like Colt use the military specification finish and dry coat.

back when i was in the Army(13yrs.) until a service connected disability cut short my carrier, all military weapons with the exception of the S&W and Colt .38 revolvers were parkerized while the.38's were in blue finish. but now keep in mind when i went in Vietnam was still game on.

There's no reason you can't paint, Duracoat, or do whatever, to an AR receiver, but you are going to want to make sure you don't plug up the holes for things like the pivot pin detent and spring.
