Finding a lease

Hey I am wondering if any of you have had success locating a hunting lease by placing an Ad in local papers? Is it worth the effort or should I pursue other efforts.

There is a local trader paper in SC that always has 3-4 ads from clubs and leases looking for new members. There are also websites where land owners post land for lease. Sorry, I don't have any URLs

Sorry about the cloudy information guys.

In my phone book the county farm agent is listed under " Agriculture Agent"
under listings for your county.

These guys are not obligated to tell you anything, but they are generally in contact with your local farmers and ranchers, and most of the time know who has land that is being leased, and wants to lease.

The lease we are on now was obtained from a conversation I had with our county agent, about a guy who had some land, that could not keep people off of it during hunting season.
I went to the rancher, and after some conversation with him, found out that he had been having trouble with hunters taking down fences, and shooting his tractor and equipment.

I assured him that the group of guys I hunt with, would never do anything that would harm his land or his equipment, and that if he would allow us to hunt on his land, we would help him keep his fences up, and would report to him, anything that looked out of the norm.

I also suggested to him, that if he would let us hang signs around his fenceing, that this would help to keep other hunters from coming over onto his property.

He seemed a little skeptical about us at first, but agreed to let us hunt the first year.

He came over and met with us the friday night before season started, and got to know us a little, around the old camp fire.

After season was over, he called me and told me, that this was the most trouble free, hunting season, he had ever had. He said he didn't even notice the season go by, because he hadn't heard any excessive shooting, and no trash up and down his roads.

Where we camped, looked better than it did before we got there, and he was tickled pink.

We have been on this lease now for quite a few years, and all we pay is his tax on the property each year. We get together with him 2 or 3 times a year, and ride fence, and help him keep his fence repaired, and our signs up.

Turns out that he is not as much interested in the lease money, as he was in just having some good hunters on his property, that he could trust.
