FINALLY picked up my S&W 586 today

Some of you may remember that I bought a S&W 586 over the internet about two months ago. Well, it's a long story but I finally got to pick it up today. Basically, since I couldn't pick it up for a month (I had just picked up another gun and MD has a one a month law) I figured it would be at the store and ready when I finally was ready for it. Well, I should have kept on top of it anyway because the seller never received my FFL's info that was sent (I'm not sure why he didn't contact me when he didn't receive it within a couple weeks of when I told him it was sent). So, my FFL needed to send it again, I had to wait for it to get there, then the mail had to get the gun to my FFL (about a week) and then MD's 8 day waiting period could start. I find an 8 day "cooling off period" for a gun that I had already waited almost a month and a half for almost humorous (or is it just maddening) .

Well, I expected some holster wear to the finish based on the description from the seller. There was a little hoster wear at the muzzle and the edge of the cylinder but otherwise the bluing is beautiful.

This must be from the first run of 586s because there is no dash, the designation is simply "MOD 586". Given that it was one of the earlier 586s I did look to be sure that it has the "M" that shows that it was sent to the factory for the recall and it does have it (I don't remember what the recall was for, but better safe than sorry). The serial # is AUM---- (or AUM---, I can't tell for sure if the last number is part of the serial number or something else, maybe added when they modified it for the recall, as the number looks a little different from the others).

The trigger is incredibly smooth. The DA trigger is smooth, just long enough (not too long and not too short), and surprisingly light (though, again, not too light). The SA trigger is just about perfect.

How's it shoot? Well, I only shot about 100 rounds (from three leftover boxes of ammo, mostly .357mag including some that were quite stout, and some .38) but from what I can tell this gun is a treat to shoot. Shooting .38s feels like nothing, and accuracy is good. With the stout .357s it still feels quite stout even out of this L-frame (not quite as much difference compared to my K-frame as I expected) and the noise caused many people to check out what I was shooting (seemed louder somehow than even my 3" K-frame, though I haven't shot the K-frame for a while so it may just be in my head- I can't wait to shoot them side by side). The regular .357s seemed just about perfect for this gun (go figure, standard .357s seem perfect in a gun that was designed from the get go as a .357, who would have thought;) ). Being a 6" barrelled revolver I expected it to be quite accurate and I wasn't disappointed (it was especially accurate with the .357 loads).

This gun may be more accurate than my CZ 75B and it also may have beaten out the CZ 75B as my favorite gun. I guess I'll have to shoot it some more to see for sure:D .

Your 586 was made sometime in 1987 according to the partial SN you gave. 586-1's came out in 86 Maybe the M was overstamped on the dash number. The product warning that the M signifies came out in 1987. Call S&W with the SN and they can narrow it down further.

Congrat's chaim, you have chosen a most excellent
handgun. I have its counter-part, a 6" Smith & Wesson
686-5 and I have been very well pleased with it's
performance. I consistently shoot tighter groups
with it, than I did the previous S&W model 28-2
that I owned. Enjoy-
