Finally- Mossberg 590A1

Hah! I finally did it and traded in my old 590 SP and picked up an 18.5" barrel 590A1. I have been coveting one for a long time now :rolleyes:. I haven't had a chance to shoot it, but it feels a lot different than the old 590. I figured I could sacrifice the few shells (old 590 was 8+1, this is 5+1) since I feel that if I can't remedy the situation with five, i'm somewhere I shouldn't be. I'll let you guys know how it shoots on monday.

Who else has A1's laying around? I'm excited to finally be a part of the club.

*EDIT* If you want sweet pictures, use an old film SLR as opposed to a point and shoot. they're dirt cheap :)
 
Don't those sights hang up on yer pocket when you draw?:D
I am sure you will find it a good gun!

Accuchoke? Was that custom (I'm assuming so) and how much did it cost?

I traded in a Mosin M44 and my old 590 for it. Paid a price difference of $240 for it (5280 armory gave me $200 for the 590 and $50 for the M44). Better than spending $350 on a conversion, and I don't have much space right now to keep more than four or five guns. The M44 was kind of the bastard child of the group and we never shot it, so I figured I'd let someone else enjoy it :). The two guns I traded in were both Big 5 guns, and I feel i've outgrown that store a little bit ;) and that M44 shot WAAAY to the left, even with the bayonet out.

Something about that old 590 plastic trigger group just irked me. I'm sure it would never be a problem, but that little voice in the back of my mind was constantly jonesing for that parkerized sucker I have now.
 
MagnumWill, I recently bought the exact same gun you have, minus the speedfeed stock. I've been traveling a lot so I haven't had the chance to shoot it much, but it is really a solid-feeling, well-balanced gun. Your pic is making me miss mine!

As I recall, mine patterned roughly a 9" spread at 12 yards with S&B buckshot. I'm curious to know how yours patterns.

Well, just got back from the range with the A1. Shot great, the action is a little stiff compared to the old 590, but i just needs a little breaking in. I'm a huge fan of the ghost ring sights, I was placing quick shots with more precision than just the bead sight. I set the target at about 12-14 yards, and it patterned about a 10-11" spread using typical Remington 00 buck, 2 3/4" full power. That new Mossberg certainly weighs a little less than the other 590, either that or I haven't been shooting in a while, it seems to kick a little harder when using the same ammo. And another thing- the old 590 would throw the shot cups from the shells all over the place, and the A1 puts them vertically right in line with the bullseye, if not hitting it occasionally. I'm surprised, does the A1's forcing cone angle differ from the old one, perhaps? I put about 50 rounds through it, and it didn't miss a beat. Plus, I got it home and the thing was sparkly clean compared to the old 590. That could be due to me not using that cheap Estate target ammo, but I was still impressed. All in all, I love it and it rocks. Super happy with it, and never selling it.
 
If the 590A1 is kicking more than you'd like, you may wish to try Remington's reduced recoil 00 buck. It really is a pleasure to shoot. That aside, put some more rounds down range to break in the gun and get some muscle memory working with the new SG. Congrats on the new toy!
 
Yes, the SBS 590A1 on the left of my pic has a SureFire fore end and a speedfeed stock. It takes a P6 light and it is bright. I have a tritium insert in my front sight so it is visible in dim light and the P6 lights everything up like a 6 cell maglight. It is not real good for long shooting sessions, as the part that the light screws into can start to beat your off hand index finger up.

As for the smoothness of the actions, only one of my 3 was smooth out of the box. I put over 6,000 shells through the full size 590 and it still wouldn't unlock cleanly when I shot it. The slide always seemed to hang up a bit as I started to pump it. Took it to the gunsmith, it was $40 well spent. Nice and smooth now.

the little extra oomph the gun has is fine (and I'm lucky, my girlfriend doesn't mind the extra kick :)) I figured it would need a whole bunch of rounds through it to break in.

A friend of mine got video of it from his phone with my girlfriend shooting target loads out of it. As you can see in the end, the action's still a little stiff. No FTE of FTF's, great gun.
