Well after three days of muzzleloading here in Arkansas , brother in law finally bagged a young-un.:)

I explained to him there is a fee for hunting on my piece of America,,,,,a pound or two of sausage should cover it,,:D:):D

His daddy is still around sooooo he may be next ,come modern gun time.

I'd love to shoot some on my hunting property that size, but our antler restriction won't allow it. I've got bunches of little basket bucks that are not legal here...we have to have at least a 13" inside spread (judged by the position of the antlers outside the erect ear position?)

What we are seeing in East Texas is a lot of bucks under 13". If they are 13" or over, they are on the ground and gone from folks who lease land for deer hunting. Thirteen 13" deer are removed from the gene pool, the new law is not working.

If they are under 13", they remain. We are raising 12" deer. I took my does early in the year and watched photos of a lot of bucks until after Christmas.
The majority of the bucks were under 13", none over 14". I took a buck that went 13 1/8" and I did so because he had a broken front leg and I did not give him good odds with the coyotes to make the winter.

The State does not want to listen, Buck Masters in Leon County raised more money than any county in Texas and they turn a deaf ear.

Another one here from East Texas. I live in Buffalo and see more huge racks than you can shake a stick at. My land backs up to Buffalo Creek bottom and there's plenty in there. I seen a 11 pointer and a 8 pointer two days ago while in the stand. The 11 pointer has about 24 inch main beams and about 19 inch spread. I'm a meat hunter and prefer does. The 8 pointer came back at the feeder today. They're usually at feeder around 11am to 2 PM. They're still by they're selves right now. Last year my neighbor shot a 12 pointer with split G-2s and G-3s. Another neighbor shot a huge 10 pointer. Maybe y'all have hunters close by that shoot anything that walks. Not the case here.
 
I've seen at least a dozen 8 pointers this year...maybe more..it's hard to recognize the ones you have already seen. I have lots of legal deer running right now and I have seen several pic's on the cameras of them butting heads already. The problem is I see a lot of full bodied bucks with little 8 point racks that probably won't ever be any bigger...and are passing on their genes. I would love to see some of the little 8 pointers thinned out, but someone in an office elsewhere knows better.
I think shooting bucks based on the number of points they have and not the width of their spread would stabilize the situation more.
In all their wisdom, we also have someone sitting in an office in Jasper
Texas that makes the decisions about how many does should be shot off of what property. I recommended 4 does be taken off of one property I manage, and they sent me 5 tags. I recommended 2 does be removed off on another property that is overrun with does and they issued 1 tag.
No rhyme or reason to the laws here and land owners and managers aren't even consulted.

Here where I am if the deer is legal to harvest, which means it has to have at least 3 points or more on one side of it's rack ( no matter how big it's antlers are) and I could use the meat, I will try and get the bugger.

I've set my sights on a big ole boy who's wandering around these parts but he's like a ghost ,ya hardly ever see him but he's out there...,,,,,.... somewhere . :D
 
Nice buck! Too bad that the regs in those areas are not flexible enough to manage the gene pool. Guess its time to start planning for the next season... Election season that is!
