Way back in 2010 I asked about the "single most important item to improve accuracy." I got a lot of answers, some helpful, some not. Anyway, it looks like I've finally found the right combination for my model 700 .30-06. After free-floating the barrel, my rifle took a liking to its Remington synthetic stock. It also likes 165 grain bullets better than anything else. And while I haven't done a statistically designed set of experiments with various powders, it seems to like 58-59 grains of IMR4350 just fine. I did have to discard one box of Nosler brass that had significantly reduced case capacity. (Those cases were 20 grains heavier than my other Nosler brass! Velocities from the heavier cases were much higher than from my other brass. Those cases didn't last long either before showing pressure signs.)
Yesterday, I fired 20 rounds of two different loads at 215 yards while checking velocities. Then I took some shots at metallic silhouettes at 215 to 545 yards. While bouncing between the different distances, I shot three (non consecutive) rounds at a paper target at 425 yards. Here is the result. The extreme spread is 3 7/16 inch.
425 yards
I know it's not Quigley caliber, but I'm very happy with it.
