Just got this from my state senator after making a call to her office:
Dear Mr. *****:
Thank you for contacting my office regarding your concerns with Senate Bill 301, which would put heavy restrictions on the sale and purchase of handguns. I appreciate knowing your thoughts on this important issue.
I agree with your concerns regarding Senate Bill 301 and find merit in your reasoning. I am a strong advocate of gun ownership rights and believe we should work toward better enforcement of our existing laws rather than add more legislation. I feel that SEnate Bill 301 excessively places too many expectations and restricitons on people in the state of Wisconsin. Consequently this law would put undo expectation on the government to monitor this issue. Excessive paperwork on each individual who purchases or transfers a firearm will have to have a file kept on record. Additionally, under this bill any individual who purchases aor transfers a firearm to another will have to be fingerprinted at their local law enforcement station. Be advised that if theis bill ever reaches the Senate Floor that I will vote against it.
The idea of banning handguns is a misdirected apporeach to addressing criminal violence. Criminals by definition do not follow the law and currently acquire the weapons of choice on the black market or theft. Most of the weapons used in crimes are obtained illegally, while laws that ban guns have the impact of disarming law-abiding citizens, who do follow the law and use guns for protection and recreational purposes such as hunting.
Thank you once again for contacting my office.
If you have any additional questions or concerns on this issue, or any other, please do not hesitate to contact my office. I am always happy to respond and be of service to you.
Sincerely,
Margaret A. Farrow
State Senator
33rd Senate District
