Filling the gap on extended magazines?

I purchased a Sig 226 back when the 228's were not readily available. I also bought quite a few hi-cap mags for it. Now I want to trade the 226 in for the 228, but I want to keep the mags for the 228 (yes, I know they work).

My question is, has anyone made something to fill the 1/4" gap between the bottom of the grip and the mag base plate? I'm thinking rubber or neoprene cut into a ring. Any comments or ideas?

I have given much consideration to the same problem. Rubber would work well and is easily shaped...you can even sand it if its hard enough. I have considered machining something out of aluminum...(I am a salesman for a mach. and mfg. company.)
Rubber may be a great trial run material ! I have a CZ compact
that accepts Full size CZ mags..the gap is approx. 10mm.

If you want to try neoprene (which is just a type of rubber)
Look up an industrial supplier in your area..get a sq. foot of
1/4" rubber (neoprene should work fine..should be compatible
with most gun oils and its the most common type of rubber)
It should cost you around 5$ for the piece...if they have 80-90
durometer , get it. The higher the durometer the harder the
rubber is. Soles on shoes are around 85-90 dur. If you dont
like the way it cuts/shapes..cut a piece that is fairly close
in size to what you want and freeze it. When frozen, it will sand
like wood..but thaws quickly. Keep refreezing it and sanding until you get what you want....I will try the same with 10 mm Neo.
A note of interst..rubber expands and contracts with hot and cold just like anything...maybe not enough to screw you up..but worth mentioning. shoot well

Thanks Guys!

Eric,
I too work in sales for a manufacturing company that has a few CNC machines. I just can't afford to tie up a machine doing something for my personal use. Your machined aluminium idea isn't bad. I wonder if theres a market out there for it? HUM!?!

Anyway, I think the rubber idea will work. Thanks for the freezing tip though. I didn't think of that.

Popeye,
Thats not a bad idea, but I would think that the extenders might be made out of molded plastic. If so, they'll be hard to reshape. Expecially if there are cavities. However, if you've alread got one and if its made out of rubber, please let me know if it fits on your 229!

FIMO!

I haven't tried it yet, but have been looking at the feasability.

FIMO, in different brands (Sculpy, Sculpy III, Cernit, Sculpy flex, etc.) are polymer clays that can be molded shaped, just like clay at room temperature. Once baked for 20-30 minutes, they become similar to a rubbery plastic.

If you fit the stuff around one of your mags you could easily custom mold it to just the contour you want, texture it, serrate it, whatever. Then put it (and the mag) in the fridge for 20 minutes which will make the stuff VERY firm (cold clay). Then remove it from the mag, bake it, and your off (or even bake it attached to the mag).

Soon you'll have a tough, custom fitted spacer that should easily be transfereable from pistol to pistol. If you want it to stay put, perhaps some rubber cement would hold it in place, but still be removable later.

Good luck!

Cedric

Oh, and it comes in a bunch of colors, black being the most utilitarian.

Eric,

Go to Sculpey.com for their home page or enter Sculpey in any search engine and you'll get quite a few suppliers. They don't do a very good job of explaining their different brands in a plain (non-artsey fartsey) way. I guess that most of them, with the exception of the Flex, will dry hard like fired clay or ceramic.

But if they flex does what it says it does, it will be worth a try. Thanks Cedric!
