Filler?

I have been experimenting with Cream of Wheat filler to bring my .44 round balls closer to the forcing cone with Pyrodex loads.
Wehn I load 30 grains of Pyrodex (By Volume) the ball seems to set too far back from the cone. I use this as a max load in my steel '58 Remingtons (Both 5 1/2" and 8".
I now use a SIG .357case full of the filer to bring the ball up.
I have noticed that there is NO change in accuracy if I use filler or not(?)!
You would expect some changein POI but there is none!
Does anyone else have experience with this issue of fillers?
TIA.

I would only bother with a filler if I was using a load so light that the loading plunger was not able to seat the ball against or compress the powder. IOW, I don't use filler. 30 grains (volume) is fine without any filler. In fact, I found my 1858 likes 30 grains best.

Never saw the need for filler. But, then again, I don't shoot bullseye competitions either. For CAS and general plinking, as well as some accuracy shooting, 20 gr fffg in my '61 Navies is accurate enough. They will shoot 1.5 inch groups at 15 yds.

I've never documented a significant increase in accuracy from using filler to move the ball up to the chamber mouth. If there is any, and many claim there is, I can't shoot well enough to prove it. OTOH, it has never proven to hurt accuracy, either.

I have not personally seen any increase in accuracy using filler to seat the ball flush with the chamber mouth. I would only consider using filler with light loads to insure I do not have any air space in the chamber. YMMV

Filler.

When civil war reenacting I used cream of wheat as a filler. For live fire, I've found that the vegetable fiber or felt wads do well to eliminate airspace. I never saw any difference in accuracy whether the ball was flush with the cylinder mouth or not. Like the others, however, I did not shoot for the same accuracy as a bull's eye competitor might.
For general purpose shooting however, I have found that using filler (or not) has little to effect on "minute of pop can" accuracy;)
