first buck of the season on the second day 5x5 western oregon blacktail 200yards .270 win, through both lungs and droped

i was in douglas county near curtin,OR in the melrose unit on a youth hunt in gustina logging land, thier real heavy in the rut now

I'm not all that familiar with BlackTails so don't mind me asking why his rack is so red? Are they just coming out of velvet or is this their naturall color for this time of year? Again, my compliments !!! :D

I forgot to mention how much I love the chocolate rack! From everything I've always heard, the dark color is from a lack of sun. Love those chocolate horns! I've spent a lot of time hunting blacktails and I've never shot a 5x5, you should be very proud bthunter!

some are dark some are light it just depends, this is the darkest one iv ever shot, and no they are in velvet about mid to late summer
 
Nice deer!

I have always been told (and you know how that goes...:p) that the racks are darker if they do a lot of rubbing on evergreens - all the pitch.

Sounds both silly and possible at the same time....
