All,
Kind of a long post but I'm excited!! Just thought I'd share my experience from this weekend and today. I went looking for ammo and actually found some, and as a bonus I learned how to find more.
Before this weekend, the last place I was actually able to find ammo was Academy Sports and Outdoors (DNT @ Parker for you in the area) - I scored a brick of .22LR about maybe 6 weeks ago. I went looking for more .22LR at a few Academy locations around here yesterday and instead found lots of 9mm (US75 @ Spring Creek). It was Blazer Brass, $11 for 50 rounds, but I ain't picky at this point so I bought 2 boxes. Plus I don't mind Blazer or Monarch anyway - my guns eat everything. But the real score was the information that the distribution trucks come in on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Evidently, every week, and every store in the area (at least the 3 I asked at).
So I showed up at that same store this morning, and...still no .22LR. But they had a bunch more 9mm, and also now .40, and .45ACP (all Blazer Brass). And a 10-box limit, which ain't bad IMHO. They also had the ugly yellow UMC 9mm 250 packs, limit 2. A guy came in right when I did and bought 10 boxes of BB 9mm - I saw them give it to him with my own eyes!! Anyway, no .22LR so they called another store for me (US75 @ SH380) and they had plenty of bricks. They even put one on hold for me. I bought 2 more boxes of 9mm and then went to the other store on lunch where I bought 4 bricks of .22LR. 2100 rounds, Remington! $16 each!! Not too bad. That's maybe $3 more than I'm used to spending per brick at Wally World. They even still had a brick with my name on it!!
Also, every Academy store i bought from seemed genuinely glad I was there. Completely unlike Wal-Mart, whose prices are good but whose service stinks on ice. One time I used my cell phone to call the WM store I was standing in because I had been standing at the sporting goods counter for about 20 minutes pushing the little call button and waiting for a clerk to show up. I REFUSE to walk around trying to find someone to help me in Wal-Mart. Arrgh!!
Anyway, thumbs up for Academy. If you live in the DFW area and can drop by before work (they open at 9am) or even on lunch, then do it. They might have what you are looking for. Well, as long as you're not looking for .380. That stuff is NOWHERE to be found.
Of course, if everybody else already knew all this then nevermind, sorry. I've seen the posts to "remember the little guys" but the little guys around here seem to gouge even when times aren't tough.
No I don't work for Academy, but I used to work for Wal-Mart.
Oh, and Bullet Trap (SH5 @ Park) had small pistol primers - Federal. Unbelievable!!
