Fiberglass barrels

Anybody remember the shotguns with the fiberglass barrels? I think it was Remington that came out with them. They didn't last long, if you scratched them hard enough they would start to unravel.

The Winchester 59 was an offshoot of its model 50, which had a patent floating chamber invented by Marsh Williams of M1 carbine fame.

The fiber wrapped barrel was also threaded for choke tubes, the first commonly available system ever made.

Grouse hunters loved the 59. Frank Woolner worked his over, made it even lighter, and praised it in print. For fast snap shooting in very close conditions, the thing shines.

It has a very muzzle light feel, which means we have to work at keeping the swing going. I've shot a half dozen or so and rather enjoy the different feel, though I do better with my muzzle heavy 870s and the Beretta O/U.

The concept of the fiber wrapped barrels may have some merit today. Imagine a set of 34" O/U barrels weighing what 28" barrels of steel do. Or, a sleek SxS of normal dimensions but a full lb lighter.

59

I saw a model 59 for sale in a gun shop near me. I'll have to go back - didn't have the money then (still don't but maybe I can work a trade).
I have always heard good things about them.

While waiting for a free field between rounds, shooters' talk often turns to guns. One day we pondered, "What if the shotgun hadn't been invented until the 21st century, what materials would have be selected?" We agreed that no one would have selected walnut -- that's for furniture. The wood and much of the metal we know in our modern guns would be done in synthetics. A laminated barrel with a thin-wall stainless steel bore liner seemed like a natural.

Might be simpler these days to just make the barrels out of aluminum, chrome lined for wear. The Armalite AR17 auto and the Baby Bretton proved that would work, not to mention all the aluminum skeet tubes.

I have no idea how you could make a BBL out of aluminum.....Sleeve it maybe? My whistle pig for my .22 is a steel sleved aluminum BBL. But for a shotgun?

Actually Jim Watson, Ivo Fabbri makes their action from titanium and trhe barrels from stainless steel

Of course, they cost about 220,000.......................:D
