FFL Transfer from Texas to Florida

I'm stumped on this one, so I decided to ask on here what the actual laws were pertaining to this transfer.

I have a rifle to transfer to Florida. The FFL in Florida is requiring me to have the rifle shipped out of Texas through an FFL.

My local FFL here is telling me that it is not necessary to go through an FFL, I can have the rifle shipped directly to the FFL in Florida via UPS or FedEx.

Thanks for the all replies.

Yes you can ship the rifle directly to the FFL yourself. Perhaps the Florida FFL has some policy about it, though. Maybe you could find a different FFL.

Legally, you can do that. I have personally done that ( well, from VT, non FFL to my FFL with rifle )

However, many FFL's go "above and beyond" the law, either thru ignorance, or the belief they are being "safe".

My advice is to find another FFL if the charge is to much.

The FFL I usually use, Family Jewelry and Pawn in Fort Lauderdale, will not accept shipments from non-FFL's. Of course, he's the only one who does $10+NICS transfers.

Another FFL I've used, Palm Beach Shooting Center, will accept transfers from non-FFL's, but wants $35 for a transfer. And he wants a photocopy of the shipper's D.L. as proof of address so he can log it into his bound book.

I suppose the ATF scrutinizes transfers from private parties? Although there's no law against it, and no law that I know of about getting copies of people's driver's licenses.

Of the 30 or 40 dealers listed in Fort Lauderdale, more than a few will do the transfer for $20 total - which is pretty fair. But there are more than 2 options.

Not having an FFL copy with a shipped gun is no different than someone trading in a gun to that dealer. The ATF could care less.
