Ok, I was thinking about getting an FFL (even more so now). I was just wondering what thecost is ($300 first 3 years???). Also what kind of Rights do I have to give up to get one of these. I wouldnt want to be a dealer, just a private FFL for collecting purposes.

You have to have a retail storefront to get an FFL. AFAIK, the only "private collection" FFLs are Curio & Relics, and F-Troop is currently about 9-12 months behind on processing them.

I don't think that's true, Coinneach. My uncle has a FFL, and he has no store front. According to him, you use lose many rights when becoming a FFL holder with regards to searches, etc. from the ATF.

Eric:
How long has your uncle had his FFL?
I've had mine since '93, and the renewal process gets stricter each time, to the point where I'm seriously considering not renewing the next time its up.
Yes, you need an area of your house thats set aside for business, with its own entrance, you have to meet zoning regs, Federal regs...it goes on. If the work area is in your home, you give up a lot of rights ref them needing a warrant to search.
I hear that those applying for first time now are really getting put over the coals. It goes to figure...so few of us left, and if anything, they are adding agents. Gotta keep them busy somehow.

Dead, the application specifically prohibits you from getting an FFL for personal use (other than a C&R version). It is specifically NOT intended to allow individuals to purchase guns for personal use and for friends. It is a license to conduct business in a government controlled product, as an explosives company, distillery, or pharmacy would require. If you want to get into the gun business your location must not have any local restrictions on it, including zoning, and it is advisable to have a building separate from your residence to prevent relinquishing of privacy rights to your domicile.
