FFL Question

How hard is it to get an FFL? I don't want it to open up a gun shop, I want it so I can order parts for my rifles and have them sent directly to me, eliminating the cost of a middleman. I recently bought an AR-15 kit, which contains the complete upper reciever and the stripped lower. This kit )$435.00 plus tax and shipping) was, due to not requiring an FFL to purchase, sent via Fed-Ex, directly to my home. Now, to get the lower reciever parts kit, I need to go thru an FFL dealer. What sux is, the lower kit from this company is a custom kit, usually shipped in more than one shipment (some of the parts are customized to the purchaser's specs). Now, for my usual local FFL to recieve stuff, it costs by the parcel size, plus his fee for the legals, totalling usually $50.00 or more. I figure that could be money used on something else, like parts, targets, gasoline, ect. Is there a way to get an FFL without having a business?

Ffl

Having previously had an FFL, the paperwork is pretty straight forward, that is the application process, the fee is pretty expensive, I think now it is $90.00 for a 3 Year FFL. Be prepared to answer a ton of questions, after you submit your application. The BATFE frowns on FFL for private usage, so you might wish to consider purchases for resale. Your best bet, if you want accurate information is talk to another FFL or give BATFE a call. I stand corrected, the FFL fee is $200.00 a year. If I recall correctly, the raise in fees were to discourage "Kitchen Table" dealers

Then you can just about forget the whole thing. They have geared the license for a resale dealer. You will have to follow all of your local codes. They made a big effort in the not so distant past to get rid of all the kitchen table dealers and if you can't produce a storefront then it will be rather difficult to get a FFL.

if you just want it for personal use its not worth it. most dealers only mark up their items 10% to stay competitive. that means that you would have to order around $700 dollars worth of guns each year to break even. if you were to go threw all the bs and get an ffl license and say your business is ran out of your house, all of your guns would be considered inventory. meaning in the event that something was the matter with your paper work the atf could seize all of your personal guns. so i wouldn't recommend it just to save some cash.
