After this season, I am going to start shopping for an all round hunting rifle. I live in Pa, if you did not know already, so I will hopefully be able to use it for both medium and large game, deer and bear for example. I was thinking that the .270 would be ok for deer, but not sure how it would be for bear. My problem is, that I cannot find a link in which I can actually compare the different rifles I have in mind. I think the best options would be the .300 or .308, as both have a wide variety of bullet weights for both sized games.

Also, what advantage/disadvantage would I have by getting a magnum as opposed to not getting a magnum, if it's offered in a particular round.

While cailber is certainly important, bullet weight and construction is probably more important. I'd go with a .30-06, it is capable of cleanly taking any game in North America.

The .30-06 gives you the versitility of shooting 150grn BTSPs for small game and varmints or deep penetrating, 180grn bullets for big game. IMO the .03-06 is the one caliber for all you hunting needs, but now you've got to find a rifle/platform you like.
