does any of you use ferrets for hunting:rolleyes:
if so what do you hunt with them and are they worth there while for your hunting methods....
i use ferrets for rabbits and rats...
as with the rabbits....we take 4 or 5 shooters(shotguns)and 2 ferrets..
cover all the holes with purse nets apart from 2 or 3..catch whatever hits the nets and the ones un covered gives the shooters some great fun banging the little critters as they run...great day out and some big numbers to be had also...bags of 50 or 60 are not uncommon in the uk.

:) I wonder if ferrets are small enough to work through mole tunnels. (Or if mole tunnels are big enough for ferrets to traverse.) Every now and then down in my pasture I see a cluster of mole hills...

Using ferrets would be a hoot in a prairie dog town, except for the hazards of the fleas as disease vectors. Our black-footed ferret subsists on prairie dogs.

A freind of mine, who has gone onto the ultimate hunting grounds, use to hunt rabbits with ferrets. He described how the ferret would go down into the hole and the ferret would get the rabbit then fall asleep. Said something about the ferret bleeding out the rabbit?? ..
My buddy would go back the next day and the ferret would be waiting for him by the same hole. Wish I understood more about what he was saying. One of our neighbors has two ferrets and they are getting out all the time and wind up in our garage.

These ferrets are too big for a mole hole but I wonder what it is that you have down in Texas as everythng else is bigger down there.

we have two but I think my girl would shoot me with one of my own guns if I took them out and hope they come back out of a hole in the ground.

I've only actually seen a very few moles. Almost as large in diameter as a squirrel, maybe 75%, but not as long in the body and of course, basically taillless.

pahoo......

tell your friend to either feed the ferrets before he takes them out then they are less likely to kill and sleep down the hole....
or tie a long piece of string around the ferret so he can pull it back out if needs be..
or there are great ferret locators on the market now so he could dig him out and grab all the rabbits in the stop ends at the same time...;)

but to be honest with you the ferrets are not trained right if they dont come out when called..

Just caught one last week that has raised H*** with my back yard. I'd say that in body, they are about the same size of your average rat. Now, pocket gophers are bigger. Yes, they just have a nub of a tail. Big paddle sized front feet, little beady eyes and the finest fur you could imagine. They are pretty neat little guys but not when they go to work in your yard. I have trapped many but not enough to satisfy me.

He is no longer with us but good info anyway. The ones out back seem to be pretty tame but I only allow one animal to shed hair or pass gas, in my house and that's me .......
