Fenix TK40 Light

One heck of a bright tac-light! Love it once I figured out how install the batteries... In 49 years, this is the first time I ever had a problem installing AA batteries. (8 or 4 in a pinch)

630 lumens of wonderfullness. I was accused of scorching my co-workers retinas with its powerful beam. Hopefully it will perform as well on an adversary!

I may pick one of these up. I have an Olight M30 Triton, and I like the battery configuration and the fact it fits in 1" flashlight mounts. However, the fact you can use AA batteries makes the Fenix rather appealing!! How do you like the user interface on it?

1 click - On/off at last setting
1 click, hold down - increment intensity
2 clicks - strobe at that intensity

4 levels of intensity, 630 lumens at top level.

The button is inset, but a groove is provided along the rim, so that an index finger could manipulate it instead of a thumb, and still have a thumb/finger solid grip.

The 630 lumen output strobed is totally disorienting if aimed at you. Pointing it away does not seem that bad.

The top setting. think HID car headlight. Seriously bright during the day. If you caught someone with eyes adjusted to nighttime, you would have a serious advantage.

I went to my step-brother's wedding that was held in the middle of nowhere in SE Kansas. It was about midnight when we left on a moonless night. I could not believe the light output of the TK40. My headlight looked like penlights after playing around with the TK40 on my way home.

I took it camping a few weeks later and the 13 lumen mode was great and didn't have to worry about spare batteries (which I had anyway). I loved it so much I had to stock them at SunflowerAmmo.com

They are cool lights, but have parasitic battery drain unless you completely loosen the tailcap such that there is no contact being made with the batteries. The drain is small, but estimated to kill the batteries within ~14 months. So it sort of ruins the notion of the light being an emergency light unless you maintain a regular program of battery replacement.

Check out CandlePower Forums. Lots of good info about all manner of lights. I just ordered a TK40 off ebay also and can't wait.

A bunch of folks are using Sanyo Eneloops in their TKs and liking the combo very much. Some may be using Sanyo 2700mAH as well (I think I will as well but that may change). Also recommend investing in some type of "Smart" charger/battery station. The batteries and charger are expensive initially but pay off in the long run.

A bit of caution should be used when using alkalines though. They may leak while left in the battery carrier/holder over time. It has been doumented but I do not know if it has been recognized by the manufacturer as a defect or condition directly related to the product, battery type, or battery brand. IIRC, it was assumed that the light's high draw caused the batteries to heat up enough to make them expand and leak. PLEASE read, they DID NOT explode, they DID NOT cause bodily injury, and they DID NOT cause a catastrophic failure of the light. It just made a mess. No nasty rumors please.
