Felons, Firearms & Party Question

I am searching for some ammunition to use in an argument. What act/law makes it illegal for a convicted felon to own/use/handle a firearm? What politician was responsible for the act/law? What political party controlled the House of Rep's when this was voted on. What political party controlled the Senate when this was voted on? What President signed it into law and when? I was of the mind that GCA of 68 might be the one but not sure and it might date further back.....TIA

The Safe Streets Act of 1968. Dodd and Kennedy. Democratic Party. LBJ signed the statute in 1968.

FYI, there was a statute in 1938 which prohibited felons from purchased guns via the mail.
