Fell in love with the Steyr Scout

Well, not really :) Well, maybe.

Got to handle one today. Some love them, some hate them.

I swung it around a bunch indoors, looking through the scope at "snap shot" ranges, rapidly raising it for a shot, lowering, raising, swinging . . . . (Making sure area is clear of people, though).

Okay, I didn't get to shoot it, feel recoil, or get a gauge of its reliability.

But ergonomically, I fell in love. That forward mounted low magnification scope is just right.

It fits me perfectly. It's just right.

But to part with $2600 bucks - ouch :(

If only it cost a grand less :(

Why is it so much?

I just don't get it. It does look like a neat rifle, but with the money I would rather have:

A Savage scout, M1A, Glock 19, Ruger GP 100, No4Mk1, and a Mosin-Nagant.

Or maybe a just a Savage scout with 13,000 rounds of ammo.

I like it a lot, don't get me wrong. But, come on!

It's machine molded plastic with a barrelled action thrown in.

Who's glass is it, Tasco's?

Granted, I'm outlying on the poor end. If I had $2600 to blow, maybe I would get one, and so then maybe that's the market...

Alls I know I'm eating ramen 3 times a day so I can save up for a $500 rig.

I guess it's all relative.

Coop, the glass is a special built unit by Leupold. They didn't scrimp in any department on this rig. The whole thing is first rate even their marketing. How else could they get so many to spend $2600 a pop? :)

$2600? Somebody is trying to rook you big time. I bought my first one which is the Jeff Cooper package for $1950. I bought my second one that was the rifle only nib for $1000. Shop around if you seriouly want one. I have the Jeff Cooper one in it's original configuration. The other one is mounted with the scope in the conventional manner. They are really neat guns.

This particular store is the biggest in town - they have incredible amounts of inventory and consequently higher prices.

Only place in town with something like this on the shelf, though.

It's surprising though that you found one THAT much cheaper.

I kind of wish they developed one without the detatchable mags, and sold it cheaper. The Scout rifle concept claimed that while detatchable mags or stripper clips were desirable, they were not necessary (and stripper clip capability would add little to the dev. cost, and are feasible with the forward scope). The rifle's strenghts (mainly ergonomics IMHO) can be realized without magazines.

I liken my look to test driving BMWs and Porsches for friends who could not yet drive sticks. Yeah, they feel good, ergonomically well engineered, refined. But at the end of the day I'll settle for a modified Z28 that can do the same job at 1/3 the price.

But then again, maybe one day. . . . :)

I don't get it, loose the bipod in the stock, and add a conventoinal scope mount and you have a prohunter without the spiral barrel. maybe i'm wrong, but i think for the exter 2000 bucks you could get someone to put a scout mount on a prohunter with reserve sights and a fancy stock with all the trimmings. as for me, the savage model seems just fine. besides who would want to take a 2000 dollar rifle into the woods to get banged up going hunting!

col. cooper is so out of touch with the real world .have you ever read his writtings.he talks about going to italy to test dive farrraies and drinking fine (expensive wine).hey that great for the upper crust.but your average joe is not interestd(cant afford) such extravagances.
i dont beleive they are selling that many scouts.iv seen one at a local gun store that has dust on it.i mean for 2 grand you can have a fine custom.
im with the savage scout crowd.

I have my scout.

It is a bolt-action 12 gauge w/
Teflon coat
trigger job
forward-mounted scope
Mounted SureFire light
Sling swivels
GR sight w/ tritium insert
3 chokes

add a Tasco 2x22mm, and the 6mm Remington "Cub Scout" George Stringer is also making up for me:

and I'll still have some money left for ammo for each over what the Steyr Scout would run. And No, absolutely none, not ONE bipod! :D

Anyone else want to 'negotiate'?

Ive got one of these- and early version Scout Rifle, Cooper package. I get pissed when people knock it so much. Retail is maybe around $2600 who knows. Most advertise it in gunlist mag for $1950. Its not often more than that. The ones chambord in .376 are closer to $1500.

But you figure 2K, minus 300 for the scope and 100 for the rings, 60 for the bipod, 40 for the great case it comes in, and then the rifle is -1500. Thats not bad when you compair its glass like action to what you get for $400 in a Savage (and yes i have a 10fp savage- super accurate even with its 2 piece junk bolt which aint smooth at all). Its also much nicer imho than the rem700. And when you consider the trigger on the scout, the amazing ergo's that "no other rifle has ever come close to matching IMHO' along with the velocities that the scout gives for the lenght of barrel, along with the 2 magazine set up it provides, along with the flip up iron sights, and smooth integrated bipod over the big standard protruding stuff, and the light weight of the overall package- Its well worth the 2K they ask for it.
Oh- and youll never find a lighter kicking .308 rifle in the scouts weight class, even if you are allowed another pound on the competition.

Ive bought and sold many rifles over the years, but the Steyr is my ultimate keeper. It shoulders and sights fater and more naturally than anything ive ever been exposed to.

My 8 cents on the subject.

Well put Iron Balls. Why is it that so many people hate a gun just because they can't afford it or if they can are to cheap to part with the money to own a fine weapon? Now for you people who own a Savage Scout and are happy with it then I am happy for you. But it ain't no Steyr.

The SS I fired definitely handled well, and was quite accurate. I don't "hate"- I just don't care for it, partially from a well-reasoned belief that the most versatile shoulder arm will not be a .308! (and, partially, 'cuz it's ugly as sin! :D) Oh, yeah, and 'cuz that barrel is too whippy thin for me. I can get what *I* what for no more, and probably less. And then write about it. ;)

I've been lusting after getting a scout ever since I handled one when they came out. As soon as a graduate from college that's going to be my first gun purchase. I love the idea of the scout and I really hate when people bash it. Yeah its expensive...but it will be something that you will have the rest of your life, so why not spend the extra $$$

Craig, that's easy. I can only think of one arm that has easily available ammunition; that has recoil (in the right piece) tolerable by virtually anyone capable of holding or supporting a shoulder arm; that is capable of taking dove, or squirrel, or turkey, or mule deer, or grizzly, or cape buffalo. And has done so.

This arm will use that forward-mounted scope as intended, at practical ranges, where it can drop a lion, or roll a rabbit. Everything is a compromise; to be able to do everything, one gives up the ability to do it at long range, but that is not the forte of the "scout" scope anyway.

The obvious choice is the 12 Gauge shotgun.

Steyr does not seem to have any plans to build any LH actions, so that does it for me....

For that kind of money, I would have a custom shop Win 70 in 35 Whelen or 338-06. Bonus is, they look good... and are available in LH...

Sometimes, being a southpaw just makes your life much easier....

12G Vs. .308 hehehehe
whats the ideal max range for a 12g- was it 25 yards or 75? please. Knowing most shots are taken around 100yards your outta luck right off the batt, and the Theroy behind the scout it that you can hit anything you can see with the naked eye. Knowing 300 yards is about the best your eye can do (save for an orange vest in a field) I'd want a .308 to be able to take anything quickly within that range. This range is also why the scout sports that Leupold scope with low magnification. Any more would slow down the sighting, and any less may haper a good 300 yard shot.

I don't understand all the Steyr Scout bashing. Aside from asthetic criticism, of course. ;) But then again, that's in the eye of the beholder...

If I had the money, would I get one? Maybe. Since I don't, will I complain? No.
