FEG SMC-380 or Walther PPKS

I am trying to decide whether to buy a KBI FEG SMC-380 (blue) or Walther PPKS (stainless). they are both about the same condition with two mags, holster, box and paperwork. The kicker is I can get either for right at $200.

Any comments on preferences? I have fired a PPK years ago but never an SMC. Anybody want to give pros and cons!

Thanks!

I was leaning towards the Walther but have heard some bad things about the Interarms American version. That is why I was also considering the FEG...haven't heard much bad although I know it isn't as common!

Aero, I have had nothing but bad experiences with 2 different American made Walther PPK/S's. Feed problems on both and the other also would require an occasional double-strike when firing double action.

I went through these 2 pistols before I bought a German made Walther, which was flawless.

I suggest you buy the Walther - then sell it for $300 and go buy a Sig 230/232.

Bought an FEG APK MK II 3 years ago. A PPK clone, so it must be similar to the SMC, though I'm not familiar with that model.

I really like my FEG. Its very accurate--consistent 2" groups at 15 feet with ammo it likes. Very reliable. Single-action trigger is very nice. DA trigger I can live with.

I own an SMC-380, which is very accurate and reliable. More accurate for me than either of my Colt .380's. Shoots FMJ or hollow point. It has a black-coated aluminum alloy frame and a blued slide. The slide on mine had a small spot where the bluing is gone when I got it.

I paid $179 for it new.

Get the Walther. Shoot it then decide what to do with it. In my neck of the woods (Czalifornia) a gun seller has a stainless Walther in used but immaculate condition for $400 with two mags.

My $.02.

FWIW, I had feed/function problems with a stainless PPK/S. I traced the problem to a too strong recoil spring. I "rolled" the spring on a belt sander (the trick is knowing how much) and the problems went away. The gun is now highly reliable.

The FEG comes in 9 Makarov, and I would prefer that to the .380.

hmmm the smc is the smaller version of the pa-63 (or ap-9) its a great value and I like my pa-63 very very much.. but for $200 I'd buy the walther, the steel is stronger, better corrosion resistance and the DA trigger should be smoother, plus it was a loaded chamber indicator..

hate to say it but yeah, I'd take the walther. The SMC/PA-63 should only cost $125-150 used.. if you ever want to get one.

I liked the feel of the FEG better but the price on the Walther is so tempting! On top of that, I can get the Walther and a Sig 229 9mm for $600 from the same guy (obviously a good friend).

So many guns, so little cash!

My first Walther bit me, but I changed my grip on it and have not had a single problem since with either a PPK or a PPK/S. Not something I have to constantly think about, either. Nor have I had feeding troubles. I couldn't be more pleased with any of the four that I've had (although, admittedly, I'm down to one, a German PPK/S .380, all the others got swapped for 1911's).

FEG makes almost the same pistol for KBI as it does for Century Arms, just to different specifications. The SMC made for KBI is not built to as high a standard of quality,IMO.
The FEG PA-63 in 9X19 is a better pistol w/ better fit and finish. You can buy it used for $100 to $150.
With all that said, I'd buy the Walther and get a little work done on it, if needed, and keep it.

P.S.: If you buy the SMC, I'll buy the Walther for $200. Contact me at PANTHERS@prodigy.net.
Good Luck,
Dave

Two hundred bucks for a stainless PPKs is a steal, run the numbers to make sure that its not hot. I had one and it jammed, I traded it in a fit of rage, for a West German blue steel beauty thats flawless. But for two hundred FRNs I would gladly take another one home, they are very pretty guns and can be fixed.

Already ran the numbers to make sure; I know the Sig is OK becuase I know the original owner and brokered the deal for the present owner!

Thanks for all the great feedback; I guess I'm going to give the Walther a try.

Die hard Walther fan here. Pick up the FEG. Work the decocker. Rack back the slide. Drop the clip.

Do any of the sounds the FEG makes remind you of a precision instrument?

Now do the same with the Walther. Listen to the gun--it sounds like you're working with a surgical tool. Compare the finishes.

No way to choose the FEG after you really look and listen to the two guns...

Just my two cents.
