So what do you guys think is good to have on hand for 12ga shotgun defense ammo? I figure 2-3/4 for anything. The more drywall friendly the better but birdshot seems to be too iffy. I'm torn between #4, #1, and 00 buck I think. 00 seems classic, but a reduced recoil #1 might be just as effective. Any thoughts? Worth ordering the reduced recoil rounds or just run down to walmart and pick up whatever they have? Is the reduced recoil good for slugs too? I figure I might as well at least have a few of those too.

If your concern is too much penetration inside the home, #4 buckshot should be the best bet.
Ballisticly, #1 is the best buckshot.
It doesn't over-penetrate like #00, has more shot on target than #00, but offers better penetration than #4.
Today, more and more law enforcement and home owners are going to reduced recoil buckshot.
This gives less recoil for faster followup shots, but is still very effective.
Unfortunately, no one seems to offer any #1 buckshot versions in reduced recoil.
In fact, for whatever reason, most manufacturers seem to be offering only #00.
Several still offer reduced recoil in #4, and that's what I'd recommend.
The reduced recoil slugs are also good.

Yeah from what I can tell there shouldn't be an issue of lack of penetration with #4 buck with an intruder like there could be with birdshot. It doesn't seem like a leather jacket, or a sternum will be stopping either. I'd question if you'd need the better performance of #1 in the average home scenario.

It usually sells for from $2.00 to $3.00 for 5 rounds, depending on the brand, and where you buy it.
