I'd like to learn more about the s&w 686+

I'm thinking of buying it NIB next week.

One thing I don't like though, is the integral lock. I wonder if it's possible to get it without that.

I don't know, any feedback before I go plop down my $600

The new models have the integral lock. Go call up all the dealers in the phone book and ask 'em if they have a new on ewithout the integral lock is abo the only way to get a new one without it. The dealers here still have lots of guns without it, but the distributors are only getting in the locking guns now. It sucks.

Smith & Wesson 686?

Another fine firearm from S&W. I bought a NIB 6"
model 686-5 back in April of 2001, and I have been
completely satisfied with its performance. However,
I passed on the 686+ model; cuz I think the six
shot model's cylinder is a little stonger, than that
of the seven shot model. However, in my case it
may not matter much cuz most of my shooting
will be with the milder .38 Special target load's.
The 686-5 does not have the integral lock design,
thank goodness! :D :)

I just recently bought a NIB 686+ with a factory installed Hi Vis front sight for $490. $600 sounds a little high.

Hello everyone, I've been lurking around here for awhile, seems like a good bunch of folks.

I own two 686P's!

One is a "snubby" and the other has a 4" barrel. Both have the lock system but I "threw away the key" and forget about them. About 1500 rounds through each. A variety of 38 spcl., +P stuff, and a variety of 357 ammo. So far so good. Love them both. Good shooting:)

The 7-shot is plenty rugged. As a novice I thought that I should be shooting only .357 manguns and went through around 9000 before switching to .38 spl for competition. No problems other than eroding the forcing cone with hot rounds with light weight bullets.

One of my revolvers has the lock and the only time I notice it is when I'm cleaning or just admiring the revolver. The keys are stored away with the box the revolver came in.

ump45,

"Hey Guy, I live in Dublin also."

Looks like we're in the same mess. Just kidding. Drop me a line and schedule time at Chabot or USI in Concord.

UMP45, I live in newark , work in columbus. I have a 686+ 4" NIB that I am looking to sell, cheap I won it in a shooting match this yr so I have room to bargin (and I could use the cash) + we can avoid all the shipping charges, shoot me an e-mail if you are interested vtr1@clover.net Rick

Ump45,

The -5 model of the Smith & Wesson 686 is suppose
to have "beefed up" internals; in order to handle a
steady diet of the powerful .357 magnum cartridge?
Cosmetically, you won't notice any difference in the
-5, as compared to older model's.

ump45,

I think I may be confused. Did you say you are in Dublin, CA? Does that mean you are shopping at Traders?? If so, put the brakes on and look around at other shops. Traders plays up like they are giving bargain prices, but they are on the middle to high end of the going shop prices. (Was going to say "street prices" but that might be misconstued.)

TargetMasters in Milpitas used to have very good prices and I got my 686+ there for $50 under Traders price, but they have had a management change and on at least one occassion I saw a better price in Targetmasters, Stockton. In either event there is less hassle with waiting in line behind the gangbangers looking for their 9mm autos.

Other TFL members may have other suggestions. (How are Reeds prices?)

Yep, Dublin, CA. I've never been to Traders though. I purchased my last handgun at TargetMasters in Milpitas (SIG P226 in 9mm). I'll probably shop there and also over at Reed's in San Jose.

Is the -5 the latest model for the 686+ ? Thanks for the feedback.

You can also try Sportsman's Supply in San Jose and Reed's Sporting goods in San Jose. I have found that Sportsman's Supply always beat the other prices around. There is a discount place in San Leandro that advertises really low prices, never been there.

I have found Reed's prices to be usually right about where Target Masters typically run. I just looked at a Model 66 SW for $509 (Target Masters) and it was about the same at Reeds, Sportsmans Supply had it for $499. I believe the 686 guns are running around $540 at Reeds and Target Masters or pretty close to that.

S&W LOCKS

I have several new S&W revolvers with the internal lock. I just put the keys in the drawer and forget the locks. They cause absolutely no problems. I personally would forget about them and buy the SMITH revolver that you want.

bountyh,

The San Leandro shop is probably Traders. I understand that they might actually give discounts to LEOs, but for the rest of us it's just a bright red tag saying "reduced for quick sale" followed by very vanilla prices.

I've been trying to get some info regarding the difference between 686-5 and 686-6. I believe I read that the -6 is the latest model, is that right?

686-4,-5,-6

So far as I know these are the 3 variants of the "Plus". The -4 had the old style lockwork with hammer mounted firing pin and case hardened innards. The -5 represented the shift to the new technology with MIM parts and frame mounted firing pin. The -6 has the internal lock and some changes to accommodate the lock. I don't know how else it would differ from the -5. I DON'T know if the -4 had a round butt or square. The later ones have a round butt. IF you could find one a real "score" would be a 686-5 Mountain Gun. These weigh right around what a K frame 4" 19/66 does.

Where are Reed's and Sporsman's?

Hey There

Can anybody give me a street address for Reed's Sporting Goods and the Sportsman's supply? I couldn't find them in Yahoo yellow pages and didn't have a real San Jose yellow pages.

Thanks!
