As you can probably tell by my name, I am a Military Policeman in the New York Guard. My unit is a Headquarters detachment. The New York Guard Army Division is part of NYS Division of Military and Naval Affairs. We are charged w/ enforcing both military and civilian laws on base or where ever stationed. Anyway although the base is NYS property and we are New York State Guard Military Policemen we are unarmed. The National Guard who share the base are heavily armed. It goes something like this..."drop the M16 or I'll be forced to hit you w/ my night stick". We inquired as to why this is and were told that while the base is NYS property it falls under Federal regulations while the National Guard drills there. One of these regs forbids weapons being possessed by anyone but U.S military personnel. The real slap in the face is that civilians are permitted to hold shooting matches here( adding even more armed people wandering around). To me it seems another case of "we trust you to give your life if need be but do it unarmed. Sorry been couped up studying NYS penal law for a couple of days w/ a room full of digruntled MPs and had to vent a little.
