Ran across this 1908 Article by Franklin Pierce. Thought everyone might be interested in reading it. His predictions of the future if we did not change our course in 1908 has about come true. Does give some good insights as to how this all began.
Just a sample:
"Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is of itself the highest political end." Liberty nourishes self-respect, self-reliance, and every impulse to a higher life. It gives birth to art, literature, and culture. It ever has been the source of all the higher impulses and aspirations of men. On the other hand, a usurping government destroys these qualities, turns the attention of the citizen to foreign politics, dazzles him with military glory, and destroys his aspirations for liberty. Surely the importance to the individual man and to our country of the preservation of liberty justifies a discussion of the present danger from usurpation of power.
