Federal Ordnance M14SA questions...

My father had me order a new wood stock for his Federal Ordnance M14SA last week (he butchered the synthetic that came on it) so I ordered a Springfield wood stock w/metal from Brownells. The stock came in and fit right on. :cool: Then my father tells me that he can't shoot it anymore (he has lots health problems that prevent him from doing much these days) and tells me that the M14SA is mine.

Cool, great as I used to have a Norinco M1A and REALLY miss it. However, as I've been reading about the Federal Ordnance, all I've read is that they are junk and not worth anything.

I've shot this one a couple times through the years and it'll shoot 1.5 MOA with factory ammo all day so it can't be THAT bad......can it? After checking it out, everything seems like it was put together straight and finished pretty good.

Serial number is: 209xx, it has a B-Square mount, cheap rings (which I plan on replacing with a ARMS mount but not sure which rings yet) and a Bushnell 3200 10x mil-dot scope (that'll do anything I would need), plus he has a leather wrap cheek riser on it (I plan on adding an adjustable one).

So my questions:
Is it really that bad? What's it worth? Anyone know the manufacture date? Anything else I should know about it?

He may be more concerned about whether or not he is going to tear up Dad's rifle by using it, or have a kb or something. If that's the case, then I wouldn't consider it to be looking the gift horse in the mouth.

Some Federal Ordnance rifles were notoriously problematic, and the company supposedly engaged in some dubious business practices when they had a store, but all of that is second-hand info, so take for what it's worth.

What I've always heard is that if you get one that runs, it will run.

If the serial is in the 2000's, then it is probably an American cast receiver, built to receive a Chinese barrel and bolt, which I'm guessing might mean you'd need a smith with M14 experience if you wanted to ever swap USGI parts into it.

I'll just say really nice. How about next time you concentrate on answering the OP's questions instead of lecturing him on your own perceptions of how he's supposed to deal with his father? :rolleyes:
