Federal Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ)

Federal's new, anticipated EFMJ round, which has been discussed in several TFL threads over the last year, is now available in 9mm +P through http://www.ammoman.com. This round may provide the expansion of better hollow points (such as HydraShok) under all circumstances and without any "fouling" issues.

Please see http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/lig/u/s/uspc40/guns/federalefmj.html for a very good description and photographs of the Federal's EFMJ and its capabilities.

Finally, along with other TFL members, I have experienced nothing but superior price and service from ammoman. You certainly can rely on Eric for excellent Internet-order ammunition.

Gee...

The EFMJ is cheaper than the cheapest JHP and may be even more effective!

This sounds just too good to be true...

What do the experts on this board think?

What really appeals to me is the "clogproof" aspect, plus the controlled expansion over a wide velocity range.

This stuff could become THE hot ticket. More testing is needed but...damn. Impressive early data.

All new technologies look great. I'll wait to see some independent testing. If cheap, reliable and effective are accurate ways of describing this load, then many agencies will be hot to test the stuff.

I can't find the 9mm gel, clothing, plywood expansion/penetration figures for current bullet designs. Anyone have the URL? Is lack of expansion a major problem with today's hp. and Hydra-Shok designs? I would think that dependable expansion would be a hallmark of Hydra-Shok and I suspect that expansion is significantly greater than this new design.

Reliable feeding might be a major plus for those of you that have feeding problems. My Glock 21 has never failed to feed. Personally, I would not use a gun that has problems feeding any factory ammunition. If my Glock misfeeds on round 5,239, I will forgive it.

I'ld like to see the results of some hunting with this... How this stuff works on ferral hogs or even whitetail. That can give you some idea on its performance as a defensive round.

I'm curious how cold weather will affect the expansion process. This obviously isn't a problem for me as even in the cold of winter, temps rarely leave the 80's around here but what about people who are outside in Vermont, Alaska, etc.; during a sub-zero cold spell? Just curious.

Being from a State that has for all intent purposes outlawed hollow points, I jumped on this ammo. Saw Eric at ammoman this afternoon and picked up 500 rounds. At around $15.00 for 50 rounds, you can't complain about the price.

Here's what the box says.

"*No hollowpoint for consistent expansion through barriers.
*Rubber front core performs well at wide range of operating velocities and temperatures.
*Rear lead core provides weight for deep penetration.
*Works well in short barreled handguns to MP-5 subguns.
*Works well in all climates and provides reliable performance over a broad range of tactical conditions."

Whether or not this ammo performs as advertised, is yet to be determined. I'm heading to the range right after dinner to check feeding and accuracy. I won't be able to recover any fired bullets, so I won't be able to determine how well (or if) they expanded.

If this stuff is as advertised, I can't wait till Federal releases it in .40 and .45 ACP.

But, either way, it's got to be better than FMJ.

Just got back from the range. WOW! SWEET! FANTASTIC! UNBELIEVABLE! REVOLUTIONARY! (You think maybe I liked them a little?)

I took my only 9mm, my PT-92, with factory full capacity mags, and several half empty boxes of ammo. So I'd have a reference point (haven't shot in a couple of months), I started out with mixed mags of 115 gr. FMJs by Fiocchi, Gerco, Magtech, PMC, Collins, UMC and Wolf. Then I fired my first mag of the new Federals. I was totally shocked. These flat nosed rounds where by far the most accurate of the entire bunch. I thought I was shooting Federal Classics, not some flat nose, rubber filled, self defense round.

Another thing I noticed was the lack of recoil. Even though the Federals are +P, they had softer felt recoil than all but the Collins and UMC.

I shot 100 rounds without a hic-up (but then again, my PT-92 NEVER hic-ups). Of course I wasn't able to recover any spent bullets, so I have no idea how well, or even IF, they expanded.

BUT, IF these new EFMJ expand as advertised, this new round could be called "revolutionary". Think about it - a round that includes a bullet that expands every time, won't clog, is extremely accurate, easy to control, sure feeding, costs less than Federal Classic, and most important to me, IS LEGAL WHERE HOLLOW POINTS ARE OUTLAWED!

Now, when can I get my hands on some in .40 and .45?

See the topic "Gel or grease in a hollowpoint makes it expand reliably at all times... " Tom Burczynski (La Designer Projecital Extrodianre) dropped in and discussed EFMJ a little.

Tom Burczynski addresses this question. The short answer is, it doesn't.
