Federal Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ) Bullets

Following is a synopsis of an article by Corporal Ed Sanow in the June 2000 issue of Gun World magazine.

Federal Cartridge and Experimental Research (Tom Burczynski) have jointly developed a new handgun bullet, the Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ). Burczynski previously patented the Hydra-Shok, Starfire and Quik-Shok bullet designs, and has now patented the EFMJ.

The EFMJ is a dual-core design. The front core is silicone rubber; the rear core is antimonial lead. The jacket is a gilding metal FMJ flat point design that is scored where it covers the front core.

The EFMJ is designed to expand, or bulge, by frontal impact. The flat point is pushed back, deforming the silicone front core. The sides of the bullet bulge outward until the jacket splits where it is scored. The silicone core 'pancakes' within the collapsed, scored front jacket. Note that the jacket deformation, not the core, determines the final diameter of the bullet.

Advantages claimed for the EFMJ are:

feed reliability superior to JHP

resistance to overpenetration superior to conventional FMJ

expansion mechanism does not rely on internal hydraulic pressure acting on a HP cavity, thus clothing or intervening barriers do not defeat the expansion mechanism

wider 'operating window' than JHP, thus the EFMJ expands and penetrates similarly in carbines and handguns

Rant on...

I e-mailed Federal a while back for info and/or a projected availability date on this round and got a rude, single sentence reply with absolutely no info included.

I may try this round out but I'm not as inclined to spend my hard earned money on Federal's products after the poor response I got from them regarding my inquiry. Not good business. I *was* almost exclusively carrying Federal ammo for duty/defense and made that clear in my e-mail.

My department requires each officer to furnish their own duty ammo, which means that we don't order 10,000 rounds at a time. I figure they must not need the little man's money so for the most part I have switched to Winchester for my handgun ammo.

Rant off...

I knew Mr. Burczynski is a TFL member, so I did a search in this forum and the Handgun Archive for 'EFMJ' and 'Burczynski' - negative results - quite likely I misspelled his name in the search criteria.

I recommend a link to [Link to invalid post] for the designer's own comments.

This design could be a major advance in terminal ballistics.
