Federal Classic Hi-Shok ammo

How is this stuff? Is it just the older version of the Hydra-Shok? How does it compare? I looked on Federal's website but couldn't find it.

IIRC, it's a "LEO Only" Training Round now.

At one time it was "the latest and greatest". It worked fine then, so I fail to see why it won't work now. In fact, it's in my 9mm and my .40 S&W as I type this. I use it as my preferred off duty carry load in those two calibers, because I can get it.

It does no good to have a carry load that you can't get enough ammo to "test" for functionality in your gun. As I said before, it worked then, so it should work now. I think sometimes we spend too much time worrying about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Not sure if Federal is still making this stuff, but the original Hi-Shok was not a bad load. It worked about as well as any other JHPs of the same vintage. These should not be confused with the older Hydra-Shok as these do not have the driving post in the hollow point cavity.

I shot a good amount of it in 9mm back when it was available at Walmart. They used to carry the 115 gr. JHP. It shot well in my guns and was my carry ammo for quite a while. It was relatively cheap and easy to find.

I just bought some .38 +P 158gr SWCHP ammo a few weeks ago from ATG and it carries the Hi-shok name too. Haven't had a chance to shoot any of it yet though.

Federal still makes it, it is the old 9BP standard pressure version of the 9BPLE +P+ "law enforcement" round which is also still made as there are a number of depts still using it. It is what I carry in all of my 9mm's, duty and off duty. It's a very effective round and has laid to rest more than it's fair share of criminals in decisive fashion.

I use them when I want to stuff my old 1966 PPK w/hollow points. It's got a rounder nose that feeds .380s like hardball through the oldtimer.-Scott.
