Federal 9bp, any good?

I was considering this as a defense load for my er' my girlfriends (she's taken a real liking to it) G19.

We took the 9bp as well as some other loads to the range, she was most accurate w/ this load & it's recoil didn't bother her in the least.

Does anyone have penetration / expansion numbers for this load? I also would appreciate everyone's opinions of this load.

About the same as the Silvertip: 10/.63 bare gel, 11.8/.58 after cloth. The 124 Nyclad does 11.5/.60 bare gel. Both are usually very accurate in most guns.

The Federal BP9 is my favorite load in several Browning Hi Powers. It is just about the perfect combination of accuracy and reliable expansion. I have been using that round for probably 7 or 8 years and have always been happy with it. While its not as cheap as surplus FMJ it is inexpensive enough to practice with unlike some 9mm hollow points. I think I paid about $40 for 100 rounds last month.
 
Hello. In a standard velocity load, the 9BP is very good. I think I prefer the Federal 124 gr Nyclad, but the difference in performance is slim. The 9BP reportedly has
good "street performance." Best.
 
We issue the 9BPLE Plus P Plus to our Officers for their Glocks and from what we have been able to discern, there is not much around that is as good, not to mention better. The 9BP is also great stuff since the 9BPLE is cop only ammo.

I have fund the Federal 9BP to be exceptionally accurate and reliable in my P7M8 and Kahr Mk9.

Boy, do I feel good! I scored 6 boxes of it at a show a while back for $10ea. I feel that is an excellent GP load for those folks(or guns) that may be sensitive to the +P+. Now, my preferred load is the 9BPLE that 7th mentioned. If I did not have some of that, it would like be the CorBon. :)
 
Federal's 9BP load is still recognized as the yardstick by which all the 9mm standard pressure rounds are judged. Many believe it to still be the best available.

What is often forgotten is that the barrel length of guns it is used in varies greatly and as a consequence so does velocity, matching the round to the bbl is just as important as choosing bullet weight and design. Out of a 92FS's 5 inch barrel the 9BP is perfect, out of a standard 4 inch it is good, but go to a 3.6 inch barrel like the P239 and it loses too much speed to function as designed. My own general rule of thumb is as follows :

5" - 115 gr standard pressure
4" - 124 gr +P
3.6" - 115 gr +P

If +P recoil and flash was a problem with the shorter barrels I would use standard pressure Nyclads, they are coated and not jacketed and have a reputation for "opening" at lower velocities. Rounds differ in actual velocity and the above system is of my own devising and is only based on some pretty un-scientific testing, but it has worked well for me. Hope this helps.
