I have a dream...
O.K. so basically I think about things too much but the question is could I buy one of the yugo 48/48a rifles that I have been seeing around alot and have it rebarreled/rechambered to 358 winchester or 35 whelen (would prefer 358 winchester) for reasonable expense. I don't know much about rifles(this would be my first bolt gun)
but I do reload so no problems there. I have heard that scoping a mauser can be expensive (difficult to drill/tap/true mounts??) but a aftermarket peep would satisfy me. So am I dreaming guys or could it be done.

People rebarrel Mausers every day. The 358 Winchester is doable as is the 35 Whelen. It is your choice -- about the same cost either way. I would check the cost of brass and loaded rounds if that makes any difference to you. In the Yugo, you might be better off with the .358 because of the intermediate length. A caution: This may not be an inexpensive proposition even if you do it yourself. Drilling and tapping a Mauser is no problem, by the way.

Rebarrel/rechamber is not the whole story. If you go to a round longer than the 8x57 (.30-'06 or .35 Whelan) you will need to open up the magazine well, and that can be tricky. The .358 should be no problem but might require some work on the cartridge guides in the rails.

Check some of the custom bullet makers.
A 250 grain 8mm might scratch that itch a lot cheaper than a new barrel. Not much different from a .318 Westley Richards.

sorry if I keep posting questions on others post, but, is a Yugo a
small ring ?I have a barrel 30/06 off a Colimbian mauser, which
Mauser action will this screw into?Czech VZ-24?George allready said the threads are smaller on Turks, and now the 30/06 is too long?did Colimbia make their own receivers? brittle POS"s!
the barrel is perfect, the Czech actions are solid and cheap, any
help. thanks.and I like the 8mm too loaded heavy, but go for your dreams, its all fun.:)

dntorbert, in addition to what's already been said and just to answer your question. The reason Mausers are more expensive to mount scopes on is that the bolt handle has to be forged or replaced for clearance and you'll need a low scope safety installed.

ZOT, the yugo is a large ring intermediate action. Your barrel should screw right into it as far as the threads go. Shank length and headspacing may/will require changing. And the mag box may need to be altered for the 30-06. I'd go with a standard 98 action like the VZ/CZ-24. George

Hi, Zot,

Colombia did not make their own receivers, they altered the magazine. I said doing so can be a bit tricky, not that it can't be done. I have done many of them, but a newbie can get in trouble and end up with no feed ramp or a ruined magazine, or both.
