Figures released by the FBI, via Bill Clinton's smiling face, indicate a steady drop in "serious crime" over the last - you guessed it - 8 years (The duration of his dynasty).

One factor attributed to this was - you guessed right again - tighter gun control.

Any thoughts on this?

My guess is that the reason for the drop is two fold... one CCW laws in many states passed during this time period. Second is the three strikes law in CA, which over the past 5 years has seen an over 50% decline in crime in CA. Bet you anything that the majority of thier drop comes from CA, Project Exile and the states that implement CCW.

Heard a CBS Radio news report on this the other day and their slant was that it was good that crime was down, but a national tragedy that we had so many people in jail. Sidebar went on with statistics about what percent of the US population was in jail or on parole, probation or supervision and compared us with the old Soviet Union, China and other "industrial nations".

They just fail to see the relationship between more criminals in jail equalling less crime.

Like Reno, Charlotte has an uptick in crime statistics (2%). The morning drive show interviewed "experts" who expressed skepticism over the accuracy of the FBI's Uniform Crime Statistics, data upon which the reports are based. "Experts" here in CLT believe the violent crime numbers (murder and kidnapping) but are not confident of the other categories.

Seems that I remember a few years ago that stories appeared which claimed the Clinton administration was cooking the books on crime statistics. Do I believe the books were cooked? I have no way of knowing. Is the behavior consistent with past history? Oh yea!

I wonder what John Lott's opinion is.

Despite the fact that we have over 20,000 gun laws, they are seldom enforced. If they are not enforced, how can they be credited with reducing crime?
While there are many contributing factors to the reduction in serious (violent) crime, I believe that the major reasons are that many of the most violent criminals are either in prison or dead.
Despite statistical manipulation by gun control advocates to persuade the public that all shooting victims are innocent bystanders, a significant number, if not a majority, are individuals engaged in criminal activity. Their demise is just another form of early retirement.
