FBI Delay on Purchase

I don't buy firearms very often, but whenever I do it seems that I am put on the delay list by the feds. Eventually they go through. However I was wondering if someone knew of a way to find out why this is, and if there is some way to get it cleared up? I have no felony charges, and I have never held a top secret clearance so this baffles me.

I am currently awaiting approval on a Glock 23. I don't want to start an inquistion in the middle of the process that might lead them to think of me as malcontent, but once this goes through I would like to get to the bottom of it.

Yes I do. I fill out everything on the forms. I don't know maybe it is a popular name that just requires further investigation, but I would sure like to get a handle on it.

Check to see if your state has one of those silly "one handgun every thirty days" laws like Virginia. I wasn't away of this law and was put on the delay list for seven days until the 31st day since my last handgun purchase.

No it doesn't, and as far as I know it only goes through a federal level check here in Kansas. Even at that I haven't purchased one in over 2 years.

Maybe someone has stolen your Social Security number and has been using it for nefarious purposes? Perhaps you should avail yourself of the free copy of the credit report that the reporting agencies are required to provide once a year and look it over, and see if there's any unusual activity on it.

usually it has to do with a last name being a bit more popular.... if they dont reply back within 3 days its yours to purchase anyways

Re the "FBI Delay and Social Security Numbers on 4473 form"

So far as I know, the Social Security Number is NOT REQUIRED on the 4473. Given that, and all the problems of/with Identity Theft, why on earth would anyone want to place theirs in "general circulation"?

If you have any particular faith in the FBI, good luck to you, I do not.

I had to go thru the background check a few months ago when getting my first gun. They ran the State Police 1st, and that was fine. But, the Feds put a flag on my application for some unknown reason. A few extra days and I was clear. The FFL dealer hadn't gotten a reason as to the delay. And I don't think the Feds want you calling them demanding a reason for the delay.

Then, a few weeks ago, when buying another gun, the gun shop decided to run my Fed check first (since I told them it hung me up last time). This time, the Feds cleared me no problem. So, I figured I'd take my gun home at that time. NOT! This time, the State Police flagged me!! I did get a reason though. The police had started with a new system between the last time and this time, and something in my past hadn't gotten the correct "acceptable" status in my records according to the new system, so they had to put a delay on mine. I was given a phone number to call to have someone figure out what was wrong. The woman I talked to was very apologetic and got to my "case" right away. Turns out, all I needed was a fax on letterhead from another State department stating the completion of a certain class. The police put that into their new system, and after that, all was fine. The State Police cleared me that night and I had my gun only after an extra day of waiting.

So, as long as you're not a felon or someone who can't legally purchase a firearm, the delay shouldn't be anything major, and should clear up in a few days. As far as getting reasons, it depends on which agency it is (Feds or State Police). The Delaware State Police were very friendly and helpful (and apologetic) about the delay. The Feds, well, they're another type of animal.
