Favorite target load?

I pick up my Remington 870 12ga in about an hour. I went to Wal-Mart earlier today and stocked up on shells cheap target loads. I got 250 Federal 2.75" 1.25oz #6, 100 Winchester 2.75" 1.125oz, #8, and 100 Federal 2.75" 1.125oz, #8.

Am I going to notice a difference in the shot between the different loads or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks.
 
All those are capable of excellent performance, I suggest you use them up and see if your new 870 "Likes" one more than others.

Right now, I suggest getting more of the cheap stuff and going with that....
 
Be aware that most if not all target ranges do NOT allow #6 shot. The largest allowed is #7.5.

Many T &S ranges are set up to handle shotfall in a specific area. That area is calculated for shot between 7.5 and 9. Using larger size shot may cause shotfall problems or actually cause injury to other shooters. Ranges that have sporting courses often arrange the course ina circle around the shotfall area. Using large shot may injure shooters on the other side of the field.

I have been hit by shot from a trap field when some jerk cheated and used #6 shot, it does travel farther.
 
I tend to stay away from federal, I find I like the cheap winchester stuff a bit better. Costs the same anyways.

For clays I go with the premium light target loads like Winchester AA's or Remington's STS. Added bonus, if you ever decide to reload save those hulls or you can sell them for a few bucks to a reloader.
 
I did some trap on Saturday and Sporting Clays Sunday. I ate through about 500 rounds between the days. The Federal with the #6 shot tore up my shoulder and really didn't seem to perform too well. I switched it out to the cheap Winchester stuff half way through the course on Sunday and my scores doubled. I don't know if it was the load or me, but I'll keep with the Winchester stuff.
 
There's a lot more pellets in a load of 8s vis a vis 6s, SM. But it sounds like you found a decent using load with the Winnies.

Though I always obey it, I've always been somewhat mystified by this convention, as it completely ignores that fact that barring doves and pigeons, most game is shot with pellets of 7.5 or larger. I mean, the difference in shot string length and lead between my skeet load using 1oz of lead #8s @1200fps and my Kent Fasteel goose load using steel BB's @1550fps is ridiculous.
 
ATA rules specify shot of 7.5 or smaller. Same with Skeet and Sporting Clays (in the US ONLY!)

Ranges have to manage lead, and have to prepare shotfall areas that can be "Mined" to recover lead. Using #6 would throw shot out of the shotfall area.


BTW European Sporting Clays (FITASC) allows larger shot. Up to 1 1/4 oz of #6 is permissible. Live Pigeon shoots allow these loads also.
