What are your favorite general purpose pump-action 12 gauge shotguns?

Something that'd be suitable for casual skeet, wandering through the woods, and basic home defense. I know these are all different disciplines, but what do you guys like for a GP shotgun?

The Remington 870.
Because it's so adaptable. There are more accessories made for the 870 than all other guns combined.

870 extra barrels are easy to find in both new and used.

Remington's quality is the best in the business.

By buying a few parts and accessories, the 870 can go from a trap and skeet gun, to a bird gun, to a deer gun, to a home defense gun, to a fun plinker, and do so in a matter of minutes.

I'd get one of the Mossberg 500 combo units they have on sale every other week at Big 5. You can get the 12 gauge with 2 barrels which include an 18.5 inch and a 26 inch for $219.99. I haven't seen a deal recently that tops that.

870, used to be a mossberg man, shot a remington for the first time last weekend, im converted, so easy to shoot and versatile

If you can find a CIRCA 1980's 870 Wingmaster Express it's great I own one but I ues a Mossberg 835 UltiMag for my Turkey Gun, just cause it chambers 3.5" - My wingmaster only chambers 2-3/4 but it's been reliable for 20+ years and never had a problem with it.

I miss my old 1300 Winchester........sold it to a buddy when I was hurting for coin........ Now I am kicking myself....... Can't face him to buy it back....Just have to go get a brand spanking new one :D ........ The Mossberg 500 2 barrel deal for under 220.00 is unreal........worth a look soon too.... ;)

Also 870 i have two love them.
we carry moss.500 in our patrol cars. rather have 870 but the cost gets the bean counters sweating.

The Remington 870. I dont like the upper tang safety like the Mossbergs, and I grew up shooting BB guns, so I'm used to the safety in the trigger guard.

Plus the 870 works and looks the nicest. :)

Would someone please explain to me how a Remington 870 "Express" is of higher quality than a Mossberg 500/590? This doesn't seem to add up when one examines them both closely. Now if you're referring to the 870 Wingmaster I might agree.

My loyalty is with mossberg. They make a buget priced version of the 500 called the maverick 88 and it was the only pump shotgun I could afford. sure, I could have saved more money but I don't regret the purchase, It has worked flawlessly so far and at 140 dollars it is a darn good value.

I hear nothing but good things about both guns (870 and 500) It ussually boils down to personal preference and the location of the safety. You won't go wrong either way, it is a win win situation. They are the most well known shotguns for a reason.

I like my Remington 870 Marine Magnum with a pistol grip stock.

The Mossberg 500. A top tang safety is much quicker and easier.

I have also on two separate occasions seen a Remington 870 manage to get a shell shoved up somewhat under and behind the bolt, I think because it "short stroked" by the operator. I wish I could recall more details or be technically more accurate, all I can remember is that the fix entailed knocking out the pins on the receiver to get the gun back into action. That has soured me on 870s, but I am sure there are people who have shot thousands of rounds and probably never saw this, so I don't expect many to concur with my choice.

My Mossberg 500 has been thoroughly used for ducks, geese, prairie chicken, turkey, pheasant, and doves, and has given exemplary service.
