Favorite Deer Rifle

I'm sure this has been done before but I don't recall so I'm going to ask it anyway.
Since deer season is upon us What is your favorite deer rifle? And does it have an interesting story behind it?
Mine is a Winchester 94 .32 Special made in 1926. I bought this one a lot of years ago from a private collection. It's nothing special but is a good shooter. For some reason a previous owner filed 15 grooves in the lever,Number of deer taken? I have no idea. But thats my favorite.
Some years ago I purchased a Remington 7mm with a good scope to replace and retire the Winchester. Guess what The Remington has never been out. I just can't let the old Winchester sit. :)
Thats my story,Whats yours? Inquiring minds want to know :)

Happy Hunting :)

Mine is my old Remington Mdl 725, in .280 Remington. I've owned it since 1960, and have killed a lot of deer, and other game, including elk, antelope, and one black bear.

The Mdl. 725 was the precursor of the Mdl. 700, but was too expensive to manufacture, so changes were made and Voila!, the Mdl. 700.

Mine still groups 3/4" @ 100 yards, with my handloads. I will keep it until I die.

Mine is the only thing I have ever used; Steyr-Mannlicher Model M in .270 Winchester, double-set triggers, 3-9 variable Svaroski scope.

Yeah, I don't buy cheap stuff. ;)

Damn good shooter. :)

Too bad I'm not a better hunter! :o

Ruger #1A in .270 with a Leupold Vari-X III, 1.5x-5x. This rifle always shoots to the point of aim from a cold barrel and is a quick handling, well-balanced rifle. I am primarly a bird hunter and this rifle comes to closest to matching the best qualities of my shotguns.

A 1936 vintage Savage 99EG in .300 Savage.

I was in college when I got it, Sophomore year.

I stopped by the local gunshop, and there she sat, just waiting for me.

The guy at the store bent over backwards to help me get it. Held it on layaway for months while I paid what I could on it.

When I started reloading for it, I started having really big case life problems.

Finally got a set of .300 Sav. headspace gauges for it. It closed on the No Go gauge. Whoops.

Just as a thought, I tried a .308 Winchester gauge set.

Yep, some "gunsmith" had reamed the damned thing out to .308 and had never remarked the action.

I had the barrel set back and had it rechambered for .300 Sav.

I've never take a deer with it, but I still love that gun.

About 8 years ago, when I was a sophomore in high school, I bought a Rem 700 in 280 with a leupold compact 2x-7x scope for $200. If I would have known enough to check, I would have discovered the bore to be rougher than he!!. I was blissfully unaware, and to this date hardly anything i put through it groups less than 2". I've put five in 5/8" with my speer 115 grain grenade load, and five in 3/4" with my 140 grain partition utility load. I'll keep this one a while, but I am intrigued after reading about the 35 whelen improved on one of the sixgun sites. Small step off of the 375 H&H, and easily as much as a 338. 4500 ft-pounds. Thud.

VEK,

Try firelapping the barrel.

It can do some really good things for groups.

Interarms Mark X in 30-06. Bought it for half price at a sporting goods store that was closing down. Took 14 deer with it. Found a load using the Hornady 165 gr BTSP (#3045) with a medium load of IMR 4350 that shoots under one MOA. Has a Bushnell 1.5-4.5X variable. I'd like to take it hog hunting.

Funny thing I forgot to mention, All the years that I've been hunting, I've never shot a deer. No kidding, I've had shots and misses, Sightings and near misses. I've even had a square dead on pistol shot but at the last minute it was a doe in buck season. No deer until.......
It took my 1988 Ford Ranger pickup to help bring down my one and only 6 point buck :D
That was in 1989 and I still have the rack but I sold the truck in 93.

257 Roberts in a Winchester M70 featherweight with a Leupold 2-7 after the leaves fall. Before that , Marlin lever in .35 Rem. with 1-5 Leupold set on 1. I used to use a peep on this, but my eyes won't let me any more. It's a bitch to get old(er). Was much more handy without the scope. Ray

As much as I like my levers, I have to go with a Rem 788 in a 308 Win.

In 1980 I was a underpaid G.I. out west and my guns were back home in the east. I went into the gunshop looking for the cheapest thing suitable for mulies. I wasn't looking for a keeper.

$150ish for a nib 788, $40ish for the scope, and I wound up with a budget tack driver that has put more than a few mulies and white tails in the freezer.

My Ruger M77MkII ss in .308 That was my first deer rifle. This year however, I may have to use the Win94 that my groomsmen gave me at my wedding!

Remington 660 in 6mm Remington, has never failed me, has taken deer, coyote, and praire dogs, why should I change.

6mm

1917 Amberg Gewehr98 Mauser in 8mm Mauser, butchered (rather than sporterized) and left in a friend's closet for 30 years. I acquired it in a horse trade for some computer parts. Now it wears a new Bishop stock, 11-degree crown, Buehler safety, Timney trigger, glass bedding, parkerizing, and a Simmons Whitetail Classic scope. 170gr Speer spitzer handloads at a full European load velocity have brought home Wisconsin whitetail, Colorado mulies, and Wyoming elk. There's prettier, and more graceful guns out there, but this one keeps an honored place in the safe!

My favorite deer rifle is an Accuracy International AWP .308 w/a Mark 4 M-1 MilDot scope. I hunt from a stand so quick shots are not common but long shots can be

I like getting close and have deer hunted with strickly handguns for the last three years. If I had to pick a rifle it would be my custom .50 cal Knight Mk-85 with Bushnell Trophy 1.75-5x32 scope and Warne quick detach rings. A 300gr XTP traveling at 2,000fps will drop a deer like a box of rocks, sorta a .45-70 "Magnum". Picture was taken after sundown, the shot was taken during legal hunting hours. -- Kernel
