Favorite 300 WM

Hi All,

I had a little good fortune with the Alaska DF&G Gods this week and scored two draw hunts for 2011. I've decided to get a new rifle in celebration and I'm looking at 300 win mags. Would love to hear people's opinions about the many options. Currently looking at a browning a-bolt or possibly x-bolt, but definitely open to suggestions. Many thanks!

Better yet where in AK are you hunting? Depending on where you are hunting you might want to look for a rough conditions rifle. I've looked hard at stainless synthetic rifles like the Remington XCR for my hunts that I do in SE Alaska. I'm headed back there for bear in May and saw that they extended the wolf season so may try for one of those as well.

I have a Ruber Hawkeye 300 wm stainless w/ grey laminate stock, timney trigger, bedded action and floated barrel. Shoots half inch 5 shot groups at 100 yds every time as long as I do my part. When I first got it it shot 1.5 inchs groups and had the most raspy nasty action I had ever encountered. After 450.00 worth of custom work and an initial 699.00 price tag it shoots like a 1100.00 rifle. I like the Hawkeye but if you are looking for out of the box perfection it is not your choice. I have a Browning medallion also in 300 wm and it is a very good choice but not any more accurate out of the box. The browning has a much smoother action than the ruger and the finish is hard to compare as one is synthetic laminate the other blued and wood.

taylorce1- I live in SE Alaska so weather is always an issue and I take care of my firearms accordingly. I'm definitely considering stainless/laminate combos.

trooper3385- I got a cow moose draw out of Delta Junction and an elk draw on Etolin Island near Wrangell. I went for filling the freezer this year rather than trophies, as 2010 was a great year for salmon and halibut, but land critters were scarce for me.

Thanks for all the input on 300's!

There are a lot of good platforms out there for you to choose from. Savage, Howa, Tikka, Browning, just to name a few. Best thing to do is to go to you local sporting goods stores and heft them. When you find one that screams "Take Me Home". Then you can start pricing that brand and model from different vendors. Nothing shoots as well for you as a rifle that fits you and you are comfortable with. Remember, the first shot is the most important.

Where at? I'm headed to the Petersburg for black bears like I said. This will be my second DIY hunt to Alaska. Got my first one there in 2006, so it is time to head back. Shot my first bear with a Rem 700 ADL .30-06, this time I'll either be carrying my .375 JDJ Encore rifle or .270 Win T/C Ventrue, both are synthetic only the Encore is stainless.

It sure is wet up there in those islands, but beautiful country. In 06 when I was up there ther first time they said that they had over 200" of snow that winter some of it was still there on the peaks. The lower elevations were pretty clear of snow, and had two great sunny days that we got bears on. That was early May 7&8 IIRC. What does the forecast look like for the middle of May?

I've got a Ruger M77 Mk II all-weather (stainless) .300 Win Mag and it's a tackhammer. Now they call that gun the Hawkeye all-weather I think. Same gun but prettier stock.
