Favorite 10mm loads

Looking for a starting point with 10mm. I would like to hear some powder recommendations ideally. I've heard 800-x is good, but have had no luck finding it. I'd like to shoot mainly 135, 180, and 200 grain bullets in fmj and hard cast. Is there load data out there for 165gr? I have a ton of plated to use. Thoughts on what primers work best? Also, is setback a problem with this cartrige? I'll be using a glock 29. Not sure how harsh the feed is on this platform. Thanks!

Lots of load data over on www.10mm-firearms.com. Here are a couple of powders I tested yesterday following book values from the powder manufactures websites. This was in a Glock 20 gen4. 800-X is supposed to be a good high velocity load for the 10mm, it just has a reputation for not metering well. That being said, I have bought a few pounds of it, but haven't loaded with it yet...

Loads worked for me, use standard procedures to work up your own loads in your gun...

With 180 gr 0.58" long bullet and Longshot with 1.26" OAL, brass with case webs 0.18" thick, I did some work ups

o) Hodgdon published 9.5 gr

a) With stock Glock 20 barrel with feed ramp intrusion to 0.25" I got a case bulge at 9.75 gr.

b) With 30-30 brass modified and case web 0.20" thick, with stock Glock 20 barrel with feed ramp intrusion to 0.25" I got a case bulge at 12 gr.

c) With Bar-sto aftermarket barrel for the Glock 20 with feed ramp intrusion to 0.23", I got a case bulge at 13.2 gr

d) With Glock 22, 40sw stock barrel modified with feed ramp 0.18" and 0.18" web, 1.125" OAL 200 gr 0.655" bullet brass fails at 12 gr Longshot

10 years went by and I wanted to see how much power I could get in 2014 when hunting.
I got a KKM 40sw barrel for the Glock 20, 200 gr bullets and Power Pistol.
I worked up loads, but could not get the chronograph to trigger with the black sky at 2,500 feet elevation.

I played with a couple of powders when I first got mine just to see what I might like about them or not. Turned out I didn't like anything about them and decided to go straight Accurate Powders. Mine is one of the 7" Javalina's from IAI who are now defunct. Rumor had it they were a 50-50 gamble on if it would hold up or fall to pieces before you done with the first magazine. Well some 30 years later an who knows how many pounds of powder through it, it is still holding it's own against the rest of the safe goblins.

I decided to use the Accurate powders since they metered so well. I use the #5 for the lighter weights like 130-150, then switch to #7 for the 150's through the 175's and then #9 for everything else up from there. All of my loads were lit using Winchester LP or CCI-300 primers. Just what I had the majority of and both have worked equally well through the years killing both paper and game.

The 180gr Gold Dot is very accurate at 1350fps and will lay a 150-200# hog down right now when put where it needs to go. I haven't used it on deer, but if needed I wouldn't hesitate as I know it will get the job done.

While you might find the lighter bullets fun to shoot, leave them home for the serious stuff. If you want some great ones to practice with and load like you would the GD give these a real hard look as they are about as close as you can come to having one to use instead of another,
180 Grain RMR Hardcore Match Plated RNFP

FOr the 130'ish grain ones I can highly recommend the Nosler's. They shoot great and hold together reasonably well in small critters, and you should be able to get some pretty good velocity out of them as well.

Cases stick to Starline and you will be happy. Just remember to size them first when your loading them just like you would if they had been once fired. This sets the case tension for your bullets and you won't be disappointed with the results.

Hope this helps.

800x produces the highest velocity, but is not consistent, Every charge must be weighed.

I use AA9 under 180gr at 1300fps.

I've mostly just loaded range shooters using a 180gn Berry's plated with AA5 or HS-6 under it.

I haven't experimented a lot with potent rounds. I have loaded 180 and 165 JHP's with Power Pistol under. Good rounds. But I've decided to reserve my Power Pistol for my revolvers. So I discontinued the workups.

I'm going to do a full work up with 180 JHP's with AA7 here real soon. The brass is primed. Just waiting for the bullets to come in. I'm going to pump these up pretty good. But I'll stay within published data. I'm not going to tear up my guns. 10mm is plenty potent within established pressures; there's just no point in hot rod rounds IMO.
