fav 45-70 powder?

Im reloading under Marlin data 300gr Hornady JHP and 325GR FTX bullets. I would like to keep the speed up a little bit but don't want to get knocked off the bench either. Just need a good whitetail deer load.

what 45-70 powder do you guys like for this setup?
 
I own several different 45-70 rifles and shoot them all with loads in the range of 1300-1600fps. With the lighter 300-350 grain bullets there are a number of "easy" loads to shoot out of the gun. This cartridge is the least fussy cartridge I've ever loaded for (been reloading for almost fifty years) and many powders produce outstanding results. Some of my favorite powders are: Rel7, 4198, 4227, 5744, and 4759 (if you can find any). Any load in this velocity and bullet weight will be tolerable and shoot very well. My nod for first place is Rel7.
 
I pulled out my targets & notes for my Ruger #1 .45-70. My rifle seems to not care what powder is used, it seems to shoots everything great! My most un-particular rifle!

For my deer load, I settled on a Rem 300gr HP in front of IMR4198. Not loaded to max but speed is 2047 fps. H322 shot just as well but needs a magnum primer for 100% burn.

I had a Browning '86, 45/70, a number of years ago (no tang safety on that one), and used the Hornady 350 grn. round nose for a bullet, and IMR 3031 for powder. Can't remember the powder charge amount, but it was a fine, accurate combination of bullet and powder, crimped well at the cannelure. I used the load quite successfully on 2 elk.
 
Good medium powder.

60-62 grains of BLC-2 with put you in the 1700-1800 fps rate. Great accuracy in general, middle of the road with CCI-200 primers.
 
My Marlin 1895 likes H4198 with 300, 350, and 400's. It will shoot all three into about 1 1/2" to 2" and puts Hornady 350 flat points into big bug holes at 100 yards. However, the sweet spot is about 2g under Hodgdon max and it WILL get your attention. :eek:
