Fastest sight for .223 semiauto sporter?

I shoot tactical competition with my .223 semiauto sporter, ranges varying between point blank and 150 meters (about 165 yards). Targets are mostly old IPSC ("politically incorrect") targets plus metal plates of varying sizes. I have used iron sights, but am considering to try with an optical sight (my eyes are not young any more). I would like to hear of your experiences with different types of sights.

First, I have considered a low power scope (conventional, scout, ACOG, etc.), but all of them limit field of view and might make short range shots even slower than with iron, of course giving better accuracy to longer shots.

Secondly, I have also considered red dot sights, but don't really like tube models too much. Even top quality Aimpoints "feel" to limit FOV, because I have to look thru a tube, so looking thru one does not feel that much different than a "real" scope at low power, except for the reticule. I know there are also "open" dot sights like Bushnell Holosight, Tasco Optima and Hesco Mepor but I have no experience of them. Also, Trijicon Reflex seems to be a sight with open field of view, but it's reticule light level is automatical with no possibility to change it manually.

So, I would like to hear your suggestions. Money is not a primary limiting factor, but I don't wan't to pay any extra if I get the same for less. Also, the tactical shooting I do requres moving between the shots and the gun might bang to something sometimes so sturdiness is a plus for the sight.

with the Aimpoint on a scout rail over the handguard the red dot tube is hardly noticed
ya just point the red dot and fire.

i bought a 30 dollar red dot for my paintball rifle from CTD
it's a blazer and seems pretty nice.
Well worth the try before ya buy an Aimpoint.

Trijicon Reflex II, It is fast, fast, fast on target!

This is my Colt 5620 w/Reflex II. The reticle is illuminated by ambient light via fiber-optics and tritium at night.

The only problem with illumination of the dot is if you have to shoot from a very dark area (no ambient light) into a bright area (the tritium illumination of the dot alone isn't bright enough to be visible looking at a target in daylight), but since you can use the iron sights with the Reflex mounted, it's not a problem.

Keep Both Eyes Open

DZ is right, an Aimpoint out over the handgaurds is very fast. If you keep both eyes open you won't get the limited FOV feeling. To test this out, turn the Aimpoint on and close the front lens cover. Now raise the weapon and look at the target with both eyes open. The dot will be superimposed on the target. This is the same principle that the Armson O.E.G. (Occluded Eye Gunsight) works on. If you don't have binocular vision this won't work, but most of the population has binocular vision.

i've got a bushnell turkey scope mounted as far forward as it will go on my armalite flat-top...a semi-scout ;)mounting. it is 1.75-4x and has a circle recticle for up-close and cross hairs for beyond snap shooting distances...might be, for me, the ultimate urban tactical scope.

for fast and hairy training (read: street fighting) i'm trying a tasco optima 2000...only downside is the self-adjusting brightness
