Fastest .22lr chronied out of 5.5 inch barrel

Had a chance to get some velocity averages out of 4 ammo types of .22lr, out of my Ruger 2245 5.5 inch bull barrel. Basically the Aguila Interceptors edge the CCI Velocitors by around 50 FPS.

The Interceptors produced a wopping 1182 FPS average from 10 shots. But the most amazing part was the that standard deviation was 11.5 FPS with a spread of only 35FPS with the 10 shots I fired.

When I tried the Interceptors out of my 16.5 inch savage bolt action a while back, I was getting around 1480FPS for the full 40 grains. I might have to try this round out to see what kind of groups I can achieve at 100 y., since these tiny comets hold supersonic up to around 90 yards.

Any way I just thought a few of you might find this interesting if your wondering about full size 5.5 inch + barrel pistol home defense. To give a rough comparison : 2&1/2 inch barreled pocket .22lr pistols usually average within (780-890 FPS ranges) with most ammo.

Yeah, Interceptors out of a 16 inch barrel is pretty powerful for a 22 LR. From a 5.5 inch barrel it'll be between 1,200 to 1,300 fps. It's going to generate the kind of energies like a 32 ACP. Not sure if I'd depend on that for HOME defense, though. Also, you're talking about rimfire ignition...

No, not my first choice, but I'm more assuming for those who don't want anything more robust or in a worst case scenerio.

On the ignition side though,.... I think I shot off a few k worth of .22lr in the last few months:- (mostly being CCI and wolf match, but I can't think of 1 dud.

Maybe it's just me but I've heard from others that proper storage/ and above par ammo brands that put a significant amount of priming compound in the rim portion: results in misfires being a rarity.

I'll take the extra velocity if I'm shooting someone from just a few feet away any day though!

I mean do ya really think you need the couple of millimeters of edge, when home defence is more-so point and shoot.;)

I'm also thinking that the interceptors would actually be more accurate then the minimags given the very low deviation levels that I gathered fom my chrono data. But I'll have to find more of this ammo to really put them to test.

You might be surprised, quite often the slower round penetrates deeper which is the key if you have to use a 22 for SD. More speed helps improve expansion and limit penetration, which is fine for larger rounds which may over-penetrate. You aren't gonna get enough expansion in a 22 to make a difference, might as well get all the penetration possible.

Actually, I'll take a slower bigger, heavier round if I want to defend myself. Like 9MM, 38 Special, 40 S&W, 45acp.
I leave the 22 to range practice, pinking, and smallgame. All of those I prefer accuracy over velocity any day.:D

Cheap shooter:

Uh I very much know bigger calibers work much better, but if you had read the first post: you'd know that this was basically info for anyone interested in chrono results for medium length .22 pistol barrels.

Thanks though for the much un-needed jabber bro!
Hope to see ya trolling on other threads just to hope to be heard out:D

Oh and when I see the angry reply, I won't answer because I'll already have known that I itched that nerve that you've got oozing out, and I'll basically be satisfied;)

Well Mr. 283 posts, I did read your first post. Otherwise how would have I known you got an whole 50 fps more out out those tiny little bullets.
I also mentioned reliability, something paramont to any self defense round. My experience with the super high velocity 22 amunition from several manufacturers has been from dismal to just OK as far as reliability goes. From my Taurus P22 Poly, most often they function, but not 100%. In my Walther P22, dismal results with most of them, Agulia being the worst, turning my otherwise reliable semi-auto plinker into a single shot. My Broening Buckmark shoots the really fast stuff OK, but accuracy suffers significantly. A trade off I am not willing to accept. Even in a revolver, a Heritage Rough Rider where semi-auto function is not a concern the accuracy is far behind CCI MiniMag, and even RGB.
If you think injecting a few facts into a discussion is trolling, so be it. But I think that might be a call better left to the Moderators?
