On rare occasion, just the right combination of conditions and events
and raw luck occur to create an unbelievable event - in this case an F-18
just passing through the sound barrier.
Not only were the water vapor, density and temperature just right,
but there just happened to be a camera tracking the plane with a shutter
speed adequate to capture the moment. The F-18 is actually passing into
transonic flight, with normal shock waves emanating from behind the
canopy and across the wings and fuselage. The condition lasts only a
fraction
of a second, and once supersonic flow exists completely around the
aircraft, sharp-angled sonic cones replace the normal shock waves.
The odds of getting a shot like this are staggering.

What a great shot, DC! Unless they were using a hi-speed movie camera, the odds of getting a shot like that must be astronomical.

Bodacious! I saw one of an F-14 pulling a high-Gturn over the Indian Ocean a shile back where the air was so humid that the vapor was just boiling off the top (Low pressure) side of the wings creating its own cloud - very dramatic. The manuver was like what Tom Cruise did in "Top Gun" when he pulled up hard and the Mig went flying by. I'd trade vital body parts for a ride in one of them things . . . M2

The odds of my sister-in-law, who was born on February 29, 1972, having a baby (my nephew) this last Monday, her once-in-four-years birthday, February 29, 2000, were one in 2.13 million, but she did - and she made the local news and newspapers as a result - her and my brother got their 15 minutes. Not much to do with jets and sonic booms, but it had to do with long odds, so there it is.

Futo, Great pics taken at the expense of of aircraft builders, NASA, etc. and put on the Web are great. What your sister in law did is awesome!

Hey, I wonder what the projectiles would look like coming from my .50BMG???
(Which I've been waiting for for a month or two now).

The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms; history shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.

I, for one, am amazed that the plastic bug could get transonic in level flight with all the fuel tanks and other impedimentia under the wings!! Walt

Mike.....Hmmmm, I never thought about trading vital body parts....I always said I would sell my soul for a ride in one of "them things"!! ;)

DC--awesome pic...thanks for sharing!

A little more info on the FA 18 photo. This is great! I was thinking high speed motion picture cameras etc.

quote:
Ensign John Gay, photo officer for Fighter Squadron Two (VF 2), shot this image from the 0-10 level
weather deck (the uppermost deck on the island) of USS Constellation (CV 64). It was shot with a
Nikon N-90s with a Nikon 70-300 ED zoom lens, using Kodacolor 200 negative film. The camera was
set for manual exposure of F/5.6 at 1/1000 sec. The image was acquired with a single shot, panned
from left to right, prefocused at approximately 200-300 yards off the port side of the ship, where the
aircraft flew by.[/quote]

John Gay? I wonder if he's related to Ens. George "Tex" Gay of Torpedo 8 (sole survivor of the Hornet's torpedo squadron at Midway).
